Alabama and Tennessee. Crimson Tide versus Big Orange. Two SEC schools with proud football traditions announced they will wear double-home uniforms for their 2026 and 2027 games. This brings up a very obvious question: Why doesn’t this happen much more often? Let’s talk about this:USC-UCLA, BYU-UtahWe have seen a few college football rivals use double-home uniforms, so it’s not as though Alabama and Tennessee are doing something entirely new in the 21st century.1960sAlabama and Tennessee wore double-home uniforms in the 1960s, so it’s not as though the Crimson Tide and Vols are doing something they have never done before.Look at this! It’s a small act which makes the sport more visually appealing. It’s such an easy way to appeal to fans and recall the sport’s older traditions. At a time when a lot of fans are upset that college football is no longer what it used to be, this is a way to bring those fans back and win them over, or at least make them a little happier. When a sport can do something simple to win back fans, it should.Obvious limitation number oneObviously, this is something which shouldn’t be done in September, when the weather is hot. Dark home uniforms in late-summer heat is no bueno. Key point: Rivalry games which moved to September due to conference realignment need to move into late October or anytime in November to allow for double-home uniforms. One example: the Apple Cup, being played this year on Labor Day weekend. We need Washington State crimson against Washington purple in late autumn on TV.Obvious limitation number twoTennessee versus Texas. Kansas State versus TCU. Duke versus SMU if SMU won’t wear a red alternate home jersey. There are plenty of same-color matchups which naturally prohibit the use of double-home uniforms. There will be exceptions.Pro sportsWe should see double-home uniforms in pro sports, not just college. Seriously: Why aren’t various entertainment entities – billion-dollar industries – not giving us eye candy on TV every week?NFLEagles-49ers double-home uniforms.Packers-Lions double-home uniforms.Saints-Falcons double-home uniforms with Atlanta wearing its classic red throwbacks (obviously, the Falcons can’t wear black).Chargers-Chiefs and Chargers-Broncos double-home uniforms.Bills-Dolphins double-home uniforms.Jets-Patriots with New England wearing the classic red throwbacks and “Pat the Patriot” helmets.Who says no to any of this?NHLMaple Leafs-Canadiens blue and red sweaters.
