Photo by Sam Hodde/Getty ImagesA common theme is developing in the WNBA, with more and more coaches becoming fed up of the outside noise. The Dallas Wings pulled off a close victory over the Indiana Fever, led by an explosive season-high 32 points from Arike Ogunbowale and a career-best 26 points from Jessica Shepard. Dallas shot an impressive 59% from the field despite a 20-point effort from Kelsey Mitchell. You’d think the postgame talk would be all about the basketball, but instead it was all still focused on the transgender situation in the WNBA.While it needs to be addressed, it’s frustrating to watch genuine achievements get completely eclipsed by non-basketball culture wars when the focus should strictly be on the talent. And that’s a common reaction amongst those in the thick of it in the WNBA.Jose Fernandez labels the outside WNBA a ‘circus’ Prior to the Dallas Wings‘ win over the Fever, Jose Fernandez was asked about the ‘non-basketball discourse’ that has plagued the WNBA recently.Interviewer said: “What have you thought of some of the non-basketball discourse that’s been circulating around the league?”Fernandez responded: “I don’t get it. You know what? It’s really frustrating. It’s a shame. Like I told you guys, I shut my whole thing down. And I don’t look at it unless my family sends me stuff or really good friends. But I’m not partaking in the circus and everything that takes away from our team, the league, the incredible players and coaches in this league. That’s what needs to be talked about. And for one reason or another, you know, the WNBA, it seems that we don’t talk about our players and teams and coaches and our game enough. You know, this s*** is not happening in the NFL, MLB, NBA.”The whole situation has been blown up even more over the last week, with the Seattle Times writer quitting after being denied a Sophie Cunningham column. And that’s not all, as there was the mother and daughter who were forced to cover up their XX-XY shirt at the Indiana Fever vs Atlanta Dream game.Read more:Kim Slusser gives speech at latest rally in support of Sophie CunninghamHow much Paige Bueckers will be fined under new CBA rules for Caitlin Clark clashHow much money Kelsey Mitchell is earning with Indiana Fever in 2026 compared to Caitlin Clark
