Moritz Seider Makes His Feelings Clear as Red Wings Questions Pile Up

By admin — In News — August 22, 2026

Moritz Seider has plenty of questions about what the Detroit Red Wings will look like when training camp opens. He just doesn’t plan on wasting much energy trying to answer questions that belong to somebody else. With Steve Yzerman no longer running hockey operations, Dylan Larkin’s trade request unresolved and Patrick Kane gone, Seider spoke Friday at the NHL’s European Player Media Tour in Berlin about an offseason that has completely changed the landscape in Detroit. His approach was refreshingly simple: control what he can control.“Some questions need to be answered, but they can’t be answered by me,” Seider told NHL.com.That’s probably the healthiest approach available considering Detroit is still searching for the executive who will make many of those decisions. The Red Wings are attempting to find their next hockey operations leader after Yzerman stepped down as general manager in July. Larkin could still be wearing the “C” when camp opens despite his trade request remaining unresolved.Seider can’t hire a GM or negotiate a Larkin trade. He can make himself an even bigger part of whatever comes next.Moritz Seider Wants MoreThat might be the most encouraging part of his comments.Seider is coming off his best NHL season, producing a career-high 60 points with 10 goals and 50 assists while averaging 25:40 of ice time, third-most in the NHL. He also played all 82 games for a fifth consecutive season and has yet to miss an NHL game. Those numbers helped Seider finish in the top five of Norris Trophy voting.Apparently, he’s not particularly impressed with himself yet.“I’m not there yet,” Seider said of joining the NHL’s elite defensemen.Good.Detroit doesn’t need Seider entering his sixth season admiring what he’s already accomplished. It needs him trying to become the defenseman other teams build their game plans around. That’s exactly where his attention appears to be. Seider said he wants to become a player opponents are “not happy to see on the ice,” he told NHL.com, with an increased emphasis on shutting down the league’s best forwards. There is a larger story developing here.Seider wore an alternate captain’s “A” last season and has openly talked about growing as a leader. The team’s own coverage detailed that expanding leadership role during the season. Now Detroit enters a period in which its captain’s future is uncertain and its front office is being rebuilt. That doesn’t automatically make Seider the next captain. It does make him one of the organization’s few unquestioned pillars. For all the noise surrounding the Red Wings, Seider isn’t asking anyone to feel sorry for them. He’s talking about getting better, shutting down stars and giving Detroit a better chance to win.Considering everything else around this team remains unsettled, that’s one question the Red Wings don’t need answered. They already know what they have in No. 53.
