‘It Is a Little Awkward’ — Ohio State HC Ryan Day Spills the Beans on Taking Son RJ to Recruiting Visits at Rival SchoolsImagine this: You’re Ryan Day, head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, and you have a son, RJ Day, who plays football, and you’re going on recruiting trips with him to universities, some of which are in your conference.Yes, that was the reality for the family, and it eventually led to the head coach’s son committing to the Northwestern Wildcats, a fellow Big Ten squad.Now, the head coach has recounted his experience going on recruiting trips with his son.Ryan Day’s Son’s Northwestern Commitment Is a Full Circle MomentIn an interview with CBS Sports, Day discussed what it was like to go on recruiting trips with his son, who ultimately chose Northwestern back in May.The head coach’s son will be part of their 2027 recruiting class, and when RJ is a freshman, the Buckeyes and Wildcats are scheduled to play each other. However, in 2028, when RJ is a sophomore, they won’t play each other. He mentioned visiting Clemson, South Carolina, and how “you get kind of a double look.”That would be surprising, right? Imagine being a staffer or something for a team, and all of a sudden you see the Buckeyes’ head coach walking around.Day spoke highly of where his son committed, mentioning Jerry Neuheisel, who’s the assistant coach and quarterbacks coach. He’s the son of Rick Neuheisel, who’s coached at both the college and NFL levels.He also mentioned Chip Kelly, who will be the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator. Kelly and Day go back a long way. Day, originally from Manchester, New Hampshire, played for the University of New Hampshire (UNH) from 1998 to 2001 and later served as the tight ends coach in 2002.Day was coached by Kelly, who was the offensive coordinator for most of Day’s playing career (1999 to 2006).START PREPARING:PFN’s Free College Fantasy SimulatorNot only that, but Kelly would later be the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Day at Ohio State in 2024.So, it’s all kind of a full-circle moment.The younger Day will join a Wildcats offense that ranked 48th in PFN’s CFB Offense Impact Metric in 2025. Of course, he won’t join the team until next season, so perhaps Kelly can overhaul this offense somewhat.Northwestern will be getting Day, a 5-foot-11, 203-pound quarterback.
