Who will win the backup job? Chargers’ QB2 spot remains unsettled

By admin — In News — August 26, 2026

The Chargers are set to play their final preseason game on Thursday against the Rams. The starters are going to play a handful of snaps, with much of the roster, especially the top of it, set before the initial 53-man roster approach. Although that is the case, the backup quarterback position is one spot that still needs to be settled. It’s Trey Lance against DJ Uiagalelei for the QB2 battle, and with neither separating themselves, Thursday’s matchup is all the more important. Justin Herbert will get some snaps, but after that, this QB2 battle will be the main focus, which is why Gennaro Filice of NFL.com will be looking at this quarterback battle in the preseason finale. “After spending last year on the Chargers’ practice squad, DJ Uiagalelei is attempting to usurp QB2 duties from Trey Lance,” Filice wrote. “Neither has truly separated himself this summer, with head coach Jim Harbaugh saying it’s a “tight” battle after the second preseason game.”Lance has gotten the starts, or at least the first man up after Herbert. It’s been a mixed bag for the former first-round pick. He has completed 22 of 36 passes for 223 yards, no passing touchdowns and an interception. As for Uiagalelei, his first outing was solid, but his second was nothing to write home about. Overall, Uiagalelei has completed 13 of 24 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns. Initially, Uiagalelei was viewed as a player who could be waived by August 30. Now, there’s a chance he’s the signal-caller behind Herbert by the time Week 1 rolls around. Should neither perform well enough to warrant the job, the Chargers could search elsewhere, whether that be a free agent or via trade with another team to fill it.This article originally appeared on Chargers Wire: Who will win the backup job?
