Vincent Kompany has said he still feels “proud” of what Manchester City achieved during his time there, after an independent commission found the club guilty of more than 100 breaches of Premier League financial rules. The breaches covered nine seasons, from 2009-10 to 2017-18.Kompany, who is now Bayern Munich head coach, was City’s captain during a spell of more than a decade at the club. He joined in 2008 and left in 2019, a period in which he won the Premier League four times. His trophy haul at City also included two FA Cups and four League Cups.Three of those Premier League titles fall within the nine seasons in which the commission found City broke the financial rules.Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany said he remains “proud” of Manchester City’s achievements during his time at the club (John Walton/PA) (PA Archive)Kompany said: “I played 11 years for the club. I’ve loved all of the years I played for the club and everything we achieved and done on the pitch, that’s something I’m really proud of.“Everything else, as a player you’re not a part of that and right now as a coach of Bayern Munich I’m not too much occupied with that topic as I’m preparing the game next week and preparing the game we have tomorrow and everything I have as a coach.”City lodged a formal appeal following a guilty verdict delivered during the international break. An independent commission determined that over £830 million in owner funding was masked through “sham” arrangements to inflate revenue, enabling the club to meet Premier League and UEFA rules. In response, City stated the commission’s judgment contained “clear material errors, of law, principle and fact, and is unsafe” while insisting that “a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence” supports their position.Rife speculation surrounds the potential penalties facing City, which might include stripping the club of titles secured by Kompany and his former team-mates.Kompany arrived at City from Hamburg back in August 2008, just weeks prior to Sheikh Mansour’s takeover which radically reshaped the club over the coming years. After an FA Cup win in 2011 ended a 35-year wait for major trophies, Kompany received the captain’s armband the following season, which concluded with City crowned Premier League champions after Sergio Aguero’s dramatic stoppage-time winner against QPR on the final day.Kompany, 40, retains strong personal ties with Manchester, having married a local woman and welcomed three children during his time living in the city.Since moving into management, he has frequently been regarded as a potential future City boss. The Belgian was manager of Burnley when charges against City were first announced in February 2023, commenting at the time: “I think all of you will have a little bit of a smile on your face to know what the football industry is about. I’m very sceptical when people start pointing fingers.”
