Pirates Top Prospects No. 10: Reinold Navarro and His Ridiculous Strikeout Totals

By admin — In News — October 22, 2026

This is one in a series of stories breaking down PBN’s Top 30 Pirates prospects. Not many players had a better showing in the Florida State League this year than Reinold Navarro did with the Bradenton Marauders. The left-handed pitching prospect finished third in the league with 117 strikeouts despite totaling just 69.1 innings. Navarro led all Pirates’ minor-leaguers with 135 strikeouts combined between his time split with Bradenton and High-A Greensboro. Navarro, who turned 20 on Wednesday, went 5-2 with a 2.60 ERA in 21 appearances/14 starts in Low-A. Opponents hit just .157 against him. The Pirates promoted Navarro to Greensboro on Aug. 18. He made three starts in High-A and struck out 18 in 9.2 innings while holding opponents to a .152 batting average. But he finished with a 5.59 ERA in his first chance in the South Atlantic League.Navarro’s high strikeout totals also come with plenty of walks. Combined between the two levels, Navarro issued 70 free passes in 79 innings. Obviously, his control will need to improve as he develops in the organization. But Navarro’s strikeout numbers are impossible to ignore. In 135 career innings across four levels, he’s recorded 233 punchouts and has fanned nearly 40% of all batters he’s faced. He’s also held opponents to an astonishing .141 batting average against.Navarro relies primary on two pitches. He has an elite fastball that can reach triple digits and pairs it well with a wipeout slider. If Navarro can improve his control and develop a third pitch, it’s possible he can be a quality starting pitcher. But right now, he looks more likely to wind up as a bullpen arm. With his ability to miss bats and his fastball/slider combination, his ceiling in the bullpen is a potential closer. But the control issues will have to subside for that to happen. There aren’t many pitchers with higher upside in the Pirates organization than Navarro. The key to unlocking his full potential will be learning how to be more of a pitcher instead of just a thrower.Related HeadlinesPirates Top Prospects No. 11: Khristian Curtis Overcomes Adversity to Make MLB DebutPirates Top Prospects No. 12: Carlos Tejera Starts FastPirates Top Prospects No. 13: Johan De Los Santos Joins Brother on ListRead more at Pittsburgh Baseball Now
