A 2027 Kentucky recruiting target reclassifies and commits elsewhere

By admin — In News — July 9, 2026

The Kentucky Wildcats basketball program moved quickly in recruiting for the 2027 class, securing an early pledge from a top 25 prospect, Ryan Hampton. Kentucky is also pursuing a number of other elite 2027 targets, including several players who rank among the top ten nationally. Yet, one notable prospect is no longer in consideration for Kentucky.
On Thursday, Marcus Spears Jr. announced that he would reclassify to the 2026 class and commit to the Texas Longhorns. Because of his age, his stint in college basketball will be a two-year affair. Spears stands 6’9″ and weighs 210 pounds, a power forward hailing from Texas and the son of former NFL player Marcus Spears. He is rated a five-star recruit by 247Sports and is currently ranked as the No. 8 overall player in the 2026 class. He joins a Texas program that is already stocked with talent and anticipated to be among the top teams in the SEC.
The Wildcats had shown interest in Spears, extending an offer last summer and even taking the time to evaluate him in person. Kentucky was considered a serious contender to land him, but his decision to reclassify to 2026 ultimately shifted the dynamic, making a Kentucky commitment less feasible. Kentucky has already added several forwards, including Milan Momcilovic, who is expected to be the starter, complicating any potential path for Spears in the near term.
This development reflects the evolving landscape of 2026 and 2027 recruiting, with Kentucky continuing to pursue high-level talent while the landscape shifts due to reclassifications and changing priorities. The Wildcats’ 2027 class remains a focal point, as the staff eyeing Hampton and other top prospects seeks to maintain momentum and build depth for a future in which the program aspires to compete at a high level on the national stage. This report originally surfaced on UK Wildcats Wire in coverage focused on how a 2027 Kentucky recruiting target reclassified and chose to commit elsewhere, highlighting the strategic implications for Kentucky’s ongoing recruiting plans.
