A little bit of everything: Stover’s versatility a key factor in explosive West Morgan offense

Oct. 22—TRINITY — West Morgan’s Kylen Stover has one job: Do everything. The senior athlete has become a jack of all trades for the Rebels this year on the gridiron and it’s paying off in a massive way.”The coaches have asked me to move around a lot this year and so it’s just something I’ve taken head-on,” Stover said. “Whatever they ask me to do, whatever they think is gonna help the team the most, that’s what I’m going to do.”Stover has not only embraced his Swiss Army knife position on offense this year, but has flourished in the role. So far this season he leads the team in receiving with 24 catches for 361 yards and seven touchdowns and is second in rushing with 56 carries for 550 yards and eight touchdowns. He’s also second on the team in pass breakups with six despite playing defense only half the time.”Whether it’s rushing, receiving, defense or even returning kicks on special teams, he can affect the game in so many different ways,” West Morgan head coach Drew Phillips said. “Players like that don’t come along all the time and he’s been fantastic this year at doing anything we’ve asked him to do.”Stover’s season bears a striking resemblance to another do-it-all former star for the Rebels in current UNA player Jalen Fletcher. In 2022 Fletcher was named a second-team All-State running back as a junior. However, going into the 2023 season the coaches felt keeping him in the backfield at all times was limiting how good the offense and Fletcher could be. That season Fletcher moved all around the offense and the results were explosive as West Morgan led the state in scoring with 51 points per game and Fletcher earned first-team All-State and Decatur Daily Player of the Year honors.Phillips believes Stover is bringing a similar impact to the offense this year.”I think that’s a great comparison because they’re so much alike,” Phillips said. “They’re fun to be around, they have great attitudes and they’re both extremely high IQ. If you’re going to succeed in a role like this, those are qualities you have to have.””Jalen’s been gone three years now, but he has still helped our program and Kylen so much. I think Kylen would consider it an honor to be compared to him,” Phillips added. It’s ironic to make comparisons to the 2023 season because, despite West Morgan averaging 43 points per game in 2024 and 39 per game last year, this year’s offense has been the most similar to the explosiveness of the ’23 squad. The reason for that has been eighth grade quarterback Brantley Phillips and the emergence of the downfield passing attack.Phillips, who didn’t take over as starter until the first game of region play, has thrown for 932 yards and 16 touchdowns as the Rebels have averaged 51 points per game across their six region games. 605 yards and eight touchdowns of that has come in the last three games as Phillips has grown more comfortable, leading to massive chunk plays for the West Morgan offense as a result.”Our job all season is just to be encouragin
