An end to Everton’s right-back saga? Spence, White, and Doue named as summer shortlist

Everton’s need for a right-back has spiralled into an excessively drawn-out transfer saga that must reach a resolution this summer. Jake O’Brien’s continued use in the position has been a persistent talking point, constraining Everton’s progression and depriving the Irishman of the chance to partner Jarrad Branthwaite in what should be the club’s long-term central-defensive axis.
The Athletic’s latest Transfer Deal Sheet lists a cohort of players who are reportedly on Everton’s summer shortlist. Spence could be squeezed out at Spurs after their ambitious recruitment drive, despite being right-footed and spending most of last season at left-back. The arrival of Andy Robertson has intensified competition for a starting berth. After earning a place in England’s World Cup squad this summer, Spence may be drawn by regular first-team football, with Pedro Porro and Robertson likely to be first-choice in North London. His local-rooted status and versatility to cover both flanks are appealing, and he is an excellent ball-carrier. He ranked second among Premier League full-backs for progressive carries per 90 and seventh for successful dribbles last season. Yet his attacking output is limited: he failed to score or assist in 2025/26 and was 40th among league full-backs for key passes per game.
Ben White could fall victim to Arsenal’s need to fund summer recruitment, having slipped behind Jurrien Timber in the Emirates pecking order. With Cristhian Mosquera offering another centre-back/right-back profile that Mikel Arteta favours in full-back roles, White could be moved on. His stock has dipped over the past two seasons, but if Everton could restore the level he showed in 2022/23 and 2023/24, he would be a valuable asset. He contributed six goals and nine assists across those two league campaigns for the Gunners.
Perhaps the favourite among many Evertonians is Doué, who cemented his reputation as one of Ligue 1’s premier full-backs last season. He posted eye-catching numbers on both ends of the pitch, scoring twice and providing six assists, and he ranked highly among French full-backs for aerial duels won (first), completed forward passes (second), duels won (third), cross accuracy (third), interceptions (fifth), and possession won (fifth). The sticking point, as ever, is his price tag. The Athletic reported that Doué’s valuation from Strasbourg could be prohibitive for the Toffees, with rumours pointing to a £40m asking price.
Everton were also linked with a potential move for Aaron Wan-Bissaka earlier in the summer, following West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League. However, the Hammers have reportedly received no enquiries for the 28-year-old, with some chatter suggesting West Ham would accept a low asking price. Whether there is any real momentum behind Wan-Bissaka’s transfer remains unclear, but the possibility illustrates the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Everton’s right-back plans.
In short, the search continues to be protracted and unsettled. The club’s midfield and defensive balance would benefit from a definitive focal point at right-back, allowing players like Branthwaite to anchor the centre of the back line with greater consistency. As Everton weigh their options, they must balance price tags with potential impact, ensuring the chosen recruit can deliver both immediate performance and long-term value. The summer window remains open, and the ambition is for a resolved, concrete plan rather than a drawn-out saga.
