PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Giants have another Bonds in their ranks. The San Francisco organization drafted Rutgers outfielder Peyton Bonds in the third round of the amateur draft on Saturday, placing him in the same franchise where his uncle Barry Bonds and grandfather Bobby Bonds both left a lasting imprint. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Bonds enjoyed a standout season for Rutgers, hitting .352 with six home runs and 13 stolen bases.
Barry Bonds, widely regarded as one of the greatest hitters in baseball history, finished his Hall of Fame career with a record 762 home runs and earned seven Most Valuable Player awards. Bobby Bonds and Barry Bonds are often cited as one of the most notable father-son duos in the sport, underscoring a lineage steeped in high-level competition and achievement.
The draft, held in Philadelphia—the city that will host Tuesday night’s All-Star Game—was rich with family ties and baseball legacy. The Miami Marlins selected shortstop Jacob Lombard with the No. 14 pick. Lombard is the son of Detroit Tigers bench coach George Lombard Sr. and the younger brother of top Yankees prospect George Lombard Jr., further illustrating how baseball roots frequently run deep in families.
Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Brewers chose high school shortstop Trey Ebel with the 25th pick. He is the brother of Brady Ebel, whom Milwaukee drafted with the 32nd selection last year. Their father, Dino Ebel, serves as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ third-base coach and is known for his coaching and mentoring roles. Dino Ebel is also expected to coach against the Phillies’ Bryce Harper in the Home Run Derby on Monday night, adding another layer of familial connection to the event.
