Anthony Edwards gets concerning trade prediction after Timberwolves overhaul

Anthony Edwards faces a looming concern about a potential trade as the Timberwolves pursue the aggressive support system he needs to compete at the highest level. The Timberwolves have faced a steady stream of shortcomings since Edwards arrived, and the franchise is anxious not to become another example of a star leaving in pursuit of a championship elsewhere. That outcome would be especially painful for a player of Edwards’ caliber, but at present Minnesota appears no closer to realizing a championship.
Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley has forecasted Edwards as one of the next young stars who could request a trade, highlighting the growing tension surrounding his situation. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, speaking on Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective in June, suggested there are NBA vultures circling around Edwards, ready to pounce if he becomes the next superstar available on the market. Although the blockbuster deal involving LaMelo Ball had not occurred at that time, such a move remains far from guaranteed to recalibrate Minnesota’s trajectory.
The Timberwolves, to their credit, are willing to take calculated risks in hopes of turning things around, but risk-taking can backfire. If Minnesota, which has not surpassed 50 wins since the 2020 draft, stumbles out of the gate next season, those vultures may feel even more confident about convincing Edwards to seek a greener pastures elsewhere.
Edwards was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, and the Georgia native has undeniably been a revelation for the franchise. Yet the onus for improving the team’s fortunes cannot rest solely on his shoulders. Minnesota has often failed to provide Edwards with the proper support, and the offseason moves have sparked debate about whether the front office has nudged the team in the right direction. Some contend the club may have weakened its frontcourt by moving Julius Randle and Naz Reid, leaving Rudy Gobert as the only dependable frontcourt presence. That shift has transformed what used to be a strength into a potential vulnerability.
As Edwards approaches his seventh NBA season, the question remains: will the Timberwolves finally assemble the complementary pieces around him to contend, or will continued gaps in the lineup push him toward exploring his options beyond Minnesota if the team falls short again? The outcome of the upcoming season will heavily influence whether Edwards remains committed to the Twin Cities or becomes the latest star drawn into a trade rumor mill that could reshape the franchise’s future.
