Arsenal star is at risk of missing World Cup semi-final if England qualify

Despite an injury that has continued to trouble him, Declan Rice has been a steadfast presence for the England team since the World Cup began. Yet the midfielder now faces the possibility of missing the semifinal if he picks up another booking in England’s quarterfinal against Norway. Rice picked up a yellow card in the match with Mexico, leaving him one caution away from a suspension. As England gear up for the next knockout game, the Arsenal midfielder must avoid another booking to stay available for the semifinal should his side advance.
Under FIFA rules, yellow cards accumulated during the group stage are wiped clean, but bookings earned during the knockout rounds stay active through the later stages of the tournament. Consequently, any player who receives two yellow cards between the round of 32 and the quarterfinal would be suspended for the semifinal if their team qualifies. Yellow cards are then erased ahead of the final, meaning suspensions for accumulated bookings do not carry into the final match.
Rice’s disciplinary situation adds extra attention to his performance against Norway. He will need to navigate his typically aggressive approach while guarding against another caution that could rule him out of a potentially pivotal semifinal. Goal reports that Rice and Jude Bellingham are each one yellow card away from an automatic suspension, underscoring the central roles both midfielders play as England pursues World Cup success. Rice has been among England’s most influential performers throughout the tournament, managing injury concerns while providing essential midfield stability and experience.
If England defeats Norway to reach the semifinal, preserving Rice’s availability could prove crucial. Steering clear of another booking would keep him eligible for the next round and allow him to continue playing a leading role in England’s World Cup campaign.
