Aston Villa Hijack Newcastle Move for (Another) Top Target Johan Manzambi

Newcastle United have suffered a fresh setback in the transfer market as Aston Villa appear poised to beat the Magpies to Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi. Reports from The Athletic’s David Ornstein suggest that Villa is close to sealing a deal for the Switzerland international after moving ahead of Newcastle, which had already reached a club-to-club agreement with Freiburg for the 20-year-old.
Contemporary coverage from The Guardian’s Louise Taylor claimed that Newcastle had agreed a £51.5 million deal (roughly €60 million) with Freiburg and had also secured a personal contract understanding with Manzambi that would underpin a move once the deal was completed. Yet Ornstein delivered a surprising twist on Sunday, indicating that Manzambi had not yet chosen his preferred destination, allowing Villa to escalate their pursuit in the wake of Amadou Onana’s knee ligament injury.
Ornstein noted that finances had never been the major obstacle for Newcastle, but that other suitors remained in the running, creating a sense of caution at St James’ Park about the likelihood of landing the player. Internally, there was a sense that waiting for the deal to be finalized carried risk, especially with Manzambi continuing to play for Switzerland at the World Cup and keeping his options open.
According to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh, Newcastle had engaged in face-to-face talks with Freiburg and aimed to persuade Manzambi and his representatives that St James’ Park represented the best environment for his development. However, Villa’s own Champions League return emerged as a significant advantage in the pursuit. Waugh observed that Newcastle could not offer European football or Champions League play, which left them more vulnerable in the negotiations.
Waugh also argued that the delay in decision was not born out of Newcastle’s lack of intent but rather Manzambi’s preference to wait until Switzerland’s World Cup campaign concluded before committing to a club, with multiple suitors of higher stature in the global football hierarchy actively pursuing him. The dynamic allowed Villa to step in more decisively, leveraging the momentum of their Champions League status.
If the deal with Villa goes through, it would mark the second time this summer that a highly-rated young target chose another Premier League club over Newcastle, following Liverpool’s acquisition of Victor Munoz a year after similar near-misses for several major targets. The Magpies had positioned Manzambi as a cornerstone in their squad rebuild after seeing Anthony Gordon depart and with some uncertainty surrounding Bruno Guimaraes, underscoring how pivotal this signing was for their long-term plans.
Missing out on Manzambi compounds the headaches on Tyneside, representing another setback to Newcastle’s summer ambitions and signaling a potential step back in their broader transfer strategy. As Waugh notes, the Magpies remain uncertain about their next midfielder target, illustrating how delicate the recruitment landscape can be when competing clubs with European football credentials are in the mix.
The broader narrative here is one of a club trying to balance ambition with reality. Newcastle have consistently shown a willingness to invest in rising talents and to push for significant upgrades in key positions, but they continue to contend with the reality that other Premier League teams, particularly those with a European foothold, can swoop in at crucial moments. The Manzambi pursuit underscores the challenge of converting initial enthusiasm and strong negotiations into a confirmed signing, especially when timing and competing offers influence a player’s decision.
As the dust settles, Newcastle will likely reassess their recruitment approach and potential alternatives at midfield. The club’s leadership will need to weigh options, consider internal development paths, and perhaps pivot to other targets who can deliver immediate impact while fitting into the club’s long-term strategic vision. For supporters, the emphasis remains on patience and clarity regarding the next steps in a window that has already delivered both hopeful signs and frustrating near-misses.
