Manchester United have apparently learned, perhaps the hard way, that their best route to securing the ideal successor to Casemiro may lie beyond the Premier League. Up to now, the club has missed out on targets such as Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes, and a potential deal for Alex Scott could be headed in the same direction. This situation has prompted INEOS to rethink their strategy of signing only players proven in the Premier League. They are now considering a broader pool that includes Ayyoub Bouaddi, Johan Manzambi, Felix Nmecha, and Aurelien Tchouameni, among others. Among these, the France international is viewed as United’s dream target, and recent reports suggest that the 26-year-old is drawing increasing interest from the 20-time English champions.
Former United manager Jose Mourinho is expected to have the final word on Tchouameni’s future, but the Old Trafford club faces a significant hurdle even if Madrid gives them the go-ahead to negotiate. Fabrizio Romano has indicated that United will not meet Aurélien Tchouaméni’s current wages, a stance they have already conveyed to the midfielder’s representatives. “Manchester United made it clear to Aurélien Tchouaméni’s camp that the only way he can join United is by accepting a different salary than he earns at Real Madrid,” Romano stated. Another obstacle is that United have yet to receive Madrid’s approval to begin talks.
Tchouaméni, who previously starred for AS Monaco, earns around €300,577 per week including bonuses, according to Capology, and INEOS is keen to trim the club’s substantial wage bill. Whether the France international will agree to a revised salary structure remains unclear. United have already endured disappointments when they chose not to pay premium sums for their preferred targets, a strategy that could prove perilous in a market that has become increasingly inflated. Chelsea maintain a silent but persistent threat in the background, ready to move if United falter. If United want to attract the top talents, it seems inevitable that they may need to pay above the going rate in this market.
Possible low-cost alternatives for INEOS include Tyler Adams and Sander Berge, both of whom have impressed on the World Cup stage. Yet these names may not excite fans to the same degree as marquee signings, and the potential for discontent among supporters remains a consideration as the club weighs its options. The debate continues as United assess their best path forward in a transfer window that demands bold choices to compete at the highest level.
