Barry Bonds’ bloodline lives on with Giants after drafting nephew Peyton

SAN FRANCISCO — A new Bonds has arrived on the local scene. The name is Peyton. Peyton Bonds. When the last famous Bonds played his final game in 2007, Tony Vitello was still years away from guiding Tennessee to a national title or even stepping into the dugout Barry Bonds once occupied. Yet the name itself needs no introduction. Peyton Bonds.
Tony Vitello acknowledged the excitement that comes with any player bearing the Bonds surname. The connection isn’t coincidental. Barry Bonds’ bloodline remains tied to the organization he helped redefine as baseball’s most feared slugger and the all-time home run king. Peyton, the son of Bonds’ brother Bobby Jr., has leveraged his genes to become an outfield prospect who earned the 90th overall selection in Saturday’s amateur draft. And it was the Giants who called his name.
The 6-foot-5 center fielder, a right-handed hitter, was the Giants’ lone position player among their five picks on the opening day of the draft. “I think the physical stature and skill set will stand out to everybody,” Vitello said, noting he has only seen a few videos so far. “From what little I’ve observed, he appears to have incredible instincts for the game. It will be exciting to watch that progress.” The nephew’s ascent underscores a lineage that has produced one Bonds in the record books, another in the major leagues, and several more who pursued professional baseball.
Peyton’s goal is to become the third generation of Bonds to reach the big leagues, following in the footsteps of Barry and their grandfather, Bobby. Peyton’s father was drafted and rose through the Giants’ farm system but eventually peaked at Triple-A in 1998. The family’s legacy wasn’t the primary reason the Giants pursued him, however. “We drafted him for his ability and for what we believe in him,” said amateur scouting director Michael Holmes. “He’s a Giant because of Peyton Bonds.”
Barry Bonds, in this moment, is not actively shaping the present in a formal role; his legacy, however, continues to cast a long shadow. Peyton’s path is his own, but the Bonds name remains a powerful banner in the Giants’ organization, a reminder of generations of talent and the enduring pull of baseball pedigree.
