Trevor Rogers and Brady Singer were the starting pitchers; neither was at his best, but Rogers fared better. Both lasted five innings and issued multiple walks, yet Rogers managed to navigate trouble, while Singer did not. The Orioles grabbed the lead in the top of the first. Gunnar Henderson and Taylor Ward reached on walks during the first three batters, and Pete Alonso struck out as Henderson and Ward pulled off a double steal. Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson threw the ball past the left fielder, allowing Henderson to score the game’s first run. Samuel Basallo walked for the second time in the inning but was left on base. It marked the first of several innings in which the Orioles stranded multiple baserunners, a common theme with both teams that day. Rogers opened the bottom of the first by issuing a leadoff walk to Elly De La Cruz and a single, though he struck out three and kept Cincinnati off the board. Both pitchers added a walk apiece in the second, yet no runs crossed. Basallo finally delivered in the third: Adley Rutschman led off with a double, Ward walked, and Alonso grounded into a double play that frustrated the Orioles’ offense momentarily. With Rutschman on third, Basallo came to the plate. After falling to a 3-0 count on Basallo in his first at-bat, Singer walked him again on 3-0, but Basallo then lined a 3-1 sinker that barely cleared the left-field wall for a home run—just enough to extend the lead to 3-0. The particular ballpark mechanics aside, the Orioles were ahead. Rogers issued two more walks in the fourth and another in the fifth, but Cincinnati did not plate a run. Singer improved a bit after Basallo’s homer, yielding only one baserunner in innings four and five—a Henderson walk that was wiped out when Henderson was picked off. Henderson, for his part, reached base twice, stole a base, scored a run, and contributed defensively, though his occasional pickoff misadventures remained a talking point this season. After five innings, both starters were done, and the bullpen took over. Rogers finished with 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 5 BB, on 93 pitches. It was satisfying to see him prevail despite command issues, though the control lapses were still a bit frustrating.
