Brandon Aiyuk takes aim at NFLPA in latest Instagram message

By admin — In News — July 18, 2026

With wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk still unwilling to pursue reinstatement to the San Francisco 49ers’ roster, anything he says publicly or posts on social media has limited practical impact unless he changes course and submits the required paperwork to the NFL.
At this point, there is no clear sign that Aiyuk’s position has shifted. However, his latest social media post appears to be directed less at the 49ers and more at the NFL Players Association. In a series of statements combined into a single graphic, Aiyuk seemed to suggest that the NFLPA mishandled his situation after he told the union he did not want to appeal the 49ers’ decision to void his guarantees because he believed he would simply end up playing for the Washington Commanders.
Aiyuk’s message creates the impression that, in his view, the NFLPA responded by trying to “start a smear campaign” and damage his name, image and likeness. He then appeared to portray his own reaction as disappointment, while still maintaining that he intended to go to Washington. According to the tone and structure of his post, Aiyuk then suggested that the union stopped communicating or became unwilling to provide additional information.
The full meaning of Aiyuk’s comments is not entirely obvious, but the message may point to a belief that he expected the 49ers to release him and that the NFLPA failed to properly explain his actual situation. That interpretation would line up with a previous Instagram post in which Aiyuk accused the union of “lying” or “withholding information.” Whether that is what happened remains unclear, but Aiyuk’s frustration appears to be centered on the idea that he did not receive the guidance or transparency he expected.
Still, the reality of Brandon Aiyuk’s situation with the San Francisco 49ers remains straightforward. If he wants a real chance to move forward with his NFL career, he has a clear path available. First, he must file for reinstatement. Second, he must wait and see whether the league approves the request. Third, if the NFL grants reinstatement, he would need to report to training camp and put the 49ers in a position where they must decide what to do next.
That decision could become significant. If Aiyuk reports and participates, the 49ers may have to weigh the risk of keeping him on the roster against the possibility of a serious injury. A season-ending injury could leave San Francisco responsible for more than $26 million in 2026 compensation. Because of that, Aiyuk could be betting that the team would rather release him than carry that risk.
Until Aiyuk takes the necessary steps, however, nothing is likely to change. The 49ers are not required to act simply because Aiyuk posts on social media or expresses frustration with the NFLPA. The only other way the situation could shift would be if San Francisco voluntarily decides to release him from the reserve/retired list. So far, the team has given no indication that it plans to do that.
For now, the 49ers hold most of the leverage. They do not owe Aiyuk money while he remains in his current roster status, and they are under no obligation to grant him the outcome he wants. Unless he formally seeks reinstatement or the team decides on its own to move on, Aiyuk’s NFL future can remain stuck in limbo.
That is the central issue surrounding Brandon Aiyuk, the 49ers and the NFLPA. Social media posts may reveal frustration, but they do not alter the procedural reality. If Aiyuk wants out of San Francisco, the next meaningful step has to come from him. Until then, the 49ers can wait, the NFLPA can stay on the sideline, and Aiyuk’s career remains unresolved.
