The Milwaukee Brewers and Houston Astros quietly completed a trade on Saturday night, with the deal reported by Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The exchange sends shortstop Braden Shewmake from the Astros to the Brewers in return for cash considerations. This move comes after Houston designated Shewmake for assignment on Friday, and Milwaukee made room on its roster by DFA’ing outfielder Greg Jones.
In 30 games with the Astros this season, the 28-year-old Shewmake posted a .256 batting average, a .272 on-base percentage, and a .423 slugging percentage, totaling three home runs and nine RBIs, for an OPS of .695. “He’ll now get a look with the Brewers instead. Milwaukee currently has Andrew Vaughn on the roster, but he’s limited to first base,” noted AJ Eustace of MLB Trade Rumors. Shewmake has experience at multiple infield positions, having played shortstop, second base, and third base, which provides the Brewers with added defensive versatility behind their starting infielders.
The Astros acquired Shewmake from the Yankees in April, though he has yet to make a Major League appearance for Houston. This marks Shewmake’s return to the majors as his most recent big-league stint was in 2024 with the Chicago White Sox, where he appeared in 29 games. Across his major-league career, he has slashed .192/.519 OPS in 154 plate appearances.
Additional context around the trade landscape and speculative discussions from other clubs have continued to surface, including ideas about moves involving players such as Seiya Suzuki or prospects that could shape future discussions across the league. This particular deal adds a versatile infield option for the Brewers as they recalibrate their roster and depth behind their starting core.
