Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a fan survey series that spans the MLB season. Throughout the year, we pose questions to the most plugged-in Brewers supporters and fans nationwide. Sign up here to participate in our weekly emailed surveys. In this week’s Reacts poll, we asked readers whether they believe it’s time for Brandon Woodruff to retire. Here are the results: roughly two-thirds of fans think the veteran right-hander should hang up his spikes. Woodruff, 33, has managed just 32 starts over the past four seasons and has spent far more time on the injured list than on the mound. Even so, when healthy he remains a capable starter—this year he owns a 2.98 ERA and a 3.20 FIP across 45 1/3 innings—though injuries have taken a toll.
Latest news on Woodruff isn’t encouraging. He underwent an MRI in Milwaukee this week that revealed a new injury to his anterior shoulder capsule, the same issue that has plagued him in recent years. His surgeon, Dr. Keith Mesiter, will seek a second opinion before outlining a potential timeline for his return. It increasingly appears that this could mark the end of Woodruff’s tenure with the Brewers—and perhaps the end of his playing days at the MLB level.
On a more hopeful note, one of this week’s national SB Nation Reacts polls asked fans to weigh in on the National League Cy Young race, and Jacob Misiorowski emerged as the leader. The 24-year-old right-hander captured 63% of the vote, ahead of Cristopher Sánchez (note: his name is misspelled in the graphic) at 14%, Yoshinobu Yamamoto at 12%, and Chris Sale at 11%. Across 18 starts this season, Miz sports an impressive 10-4 record with a league-leading 1.62 ERA, a 2.10 FIP, and 167 strikeouts across 111 innings, putting him on track to push past 200 innings and potentially reach 300 strikeouts—an achievement only a few pitchers have reached since 2003. The last players to reach 300 strikeouts were Justin Verlander (300) and Gerrit Cole (326) in 2019, with just five pitchers reaching 300 strikeouts in the 20-year span since.
Across fan discussions, Misiorowski is the heavy favorite on FanDuel Sportsbook, listed at -600 odds (bet $600 to win $100) to win the Cy Young, while Sánchez trails at +600 (bet $100 to win $600). Of course, there is still ample time left in the season for twists and turns, so the storylines could shift dramatically over the next two-plus months.
