Arkansas basketball and John Calipari made a big splash on Tuesday, landing a commitment from four-star big man Caleb Ourigou. The Class of 2027 prospect is weighing whether to reclassify and become part of the Class of 2026, thereby joining this coming season’s Arkansas roster.Ourigou’s willingness to consider reclassification means Arkansas and Calipari face two reclassification dramas, not just one. Remember: Davion Thompson, a guard, is also thinking about reclassifying from 2027 to 2026 at Arkansas. His decision is expected to come very soon. One has to wonder if the Ourigou commitment will change Thompson’s mind, one way or another, or if Ourigou’s and Thompson’s reclassification decisions have anything to do with the other’s plans. Will we see simultaneous announcements or one player making an isolated decision and the other player reacting to it?AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementWhile you think about all of those questions, we now have the exciting but nerve-wracking scenario of seeing two young men making decisions which will have a substantial impact on the coming Arkansas basketball season. If just one of Ourigou or Thompson reclassifies to 2026, it will not be a worst-case scenario. Most Arkansas fans would hope that if one of the two players does reclassify, it’s Ourigou, given that the Hogs need a quality big man more than they need a quality guard at this point.Going 0 for 2 in reclassification would be a brutal outcome as far as the coming season is concerned. It would leave Arkansas loaded for 2027-2028, but the coming season would feel like a much bigger uphill battle. If, on the other hand, John Calipari gets two reclassifications from Ourigou and Thompson, then Arkansas becomes fully stacked and would become, for many analysts, a top-eight team going into the season with a real chance to make the Final Four.Arkansas would get the formidable big man it always did need to take the next step in its roster construction process. It would add a backcourt depth piece in Thompson and would be able to use a 10-man rotation to wear out opponents while not placing too much of a burden on any individual player. If both reclassification decisions go Arkansas’ way, the Razorbacks will gain so much more roster flexibility. They would have the assemblage of different skill sets which could take the Hogs all the way to their April promised land on the final weekend of the college basketball season. Two very big decisions await. The state of Arkansas is holding its breath — you can feel it.
