Cardinals agree to an 8-year, $112.5M extension with JJ Wetherholt, AP source says

The St. Louis Cardinals and JJ Wetherholt have finalized an eight-year, $112.5 million contract extension that secures the rookie second baseman’s first several years of free agency, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Friday. The individual spoke on condition of anonymity because the club had not yet announced the agreement.
Wetherholt, who was selected seventh overall by the Cardinals out of West Virginia in the 2022 draft, quickly rose through the organization’s farm system. At 23 years old, he made his major league debut on Opening Day and entered Friday night’s game against the Atlanta Braves with a .267 batting average, 13 homers, 36 RBIs and nine stolen bases. Advanced metrics have also praised Wetherholt as one of the better defensive second basemen in baseball this season, underscoring his value on both sides of the diamond.
His rapid emergence as a core piece in the middle of St. Louis’s infield has helped fuel what has been one of the more surprising stories of the first half of the season. The Cardinals stood at 48-44, three games behind the NL wild-card cutoff as the weekend approached. Wetherholt’s development has provided a spark for a club that has seen gradual improvements and resumed optimism about its on-field prospects.
The eight-year extension represents one of the first major long-term commitments for the Cardinals amid a period of notable leadership changes at the top of the organization. Last September, Chaim Bloom assumed the role of president of baseball operations, succeeding longtime general manager John Mozeliak. Then, in May, Bill DeWitt III took over as chief executive officer, while Bill DeWitt Jr. remains chairman and principal owner, continuing his involvement in baseball and business decisions.
In the broader context of Major League Baseball, Wetherholt’s deal stands as a significant development for a franchise that has been recalibrating its front office structure while still aiming to contend in a competitive National League environment. The extension not only secures a promising young talent for the foreseeable future but also signals the Cardinals’ willingness to commit to players who demonstrate a combination of offensive upside and defensive versatility at a premium position.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on how Wetherholt leverages his strengths to contribute to a roster that has shown flashes of potential and resilience. If his current trajectory continues, the contract could become a cornerstone of St. Louis’s long-term plans, reinforcing the team’s confidence in his ability to anchor second base for years to come.
