Sheffield United and Chesterfield played out a goalless draw in North Derbyshire on Saturday afternoon, as the Blades continued to gear up for the new season. United handed a debut to Romelle Donovan, the club’s recent summer signing, while Jamal Baptiste also featured again for the visitors.
Chesterfield lined up with Hemming in goal, Eccleston, Pong, Simpson, Gordon, Naylor, McEachran, Markanday, a Trialist, Koroma and Bonis. The substitutes included Mandeville, Stirk, Butterfield, Sotiriou, Dunkley, Cook, Elliott, Whitney, Sissons and Wozniczka. United selected Cooper (substituted by Davies at 45), Arblaster (Peck 60), Tanganga (McGuinness 70), Rothwell (Riedewald 60), Hamer (McGlinchey 60), Cannon (Marsh 60), Donovan (O’Hare 45), Burrows (McCallum 60), Baptiste, Seriki (Sachdev 80) and Bamford (Campbell 60) as the XI. Unused substitutes included Shackleton, Zatterstrom, Betts, Sasnauskas and Blacker.
The opening phases offered limited goal-threat, with both teams taking time to settle into the match. As United began to find their rhythm, they created the first meaningful opening through Bamford. A clever exchange between Donovan and Seriki set up Bamford, but he could not convert. Shortly afterwards, Harrison Burrows unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the box, forcing a save from the Chesterfield keeper Boot.
Chesterfield responded midway through the first half when Gordon sprinted down the left flank, only to be halted by a late challenge from Seriki, who earned a booking from the referee. McEachran delivered the resulting set-piece, but United’s defense cleared the danger.
The hosts nearly edged in front just before the break as Eccleston delivered a short ball into the penalty area, finding Dilan Markanday, whose first-time volley struck the crossbar and bounced away to safety. United were almost caught out moments later when Bonis bore down on goal and squared for Koroma; his curling effort took a deflection and ended up behind for a corner.
Halftime brought tactical reshuffles as Chris Wilder made two changes, bringing on Adam Davies and Callum O’Hare in place of Michael Cooper and Donovan. The manager then orchestrated a broader reshuffle around the hour mark, making a further six substitutions to ensure minutes for a broad portion of the squad, with Sydie Peck among those entering the fray.
Before the wholesale changes, Hamer’s dangerous corner unsettled the Chesterfield defense, and Tom Cannon created a shooting opportunity of his own without finding the back of the net. One substitute nearly opened the scoring immediately as Tyrese Campbell displayed notable strength, shrugging off two defenders to drive into the box, but his left-footed shot narrowly missed the far post.
Chesterfield continued to threaten on the counterattack. Elliott picked out Sotiriou in space on the edge of the area, but the visitors’ defence held firm as United chased a breakthrough that ultimately did not arrive. The match finished 0-0, with both sides taking positives as they prepared for ongoing pre-season duties and the upcoming campaign. The result offered a reminder that, while pre-season results matter less than fitness and integration, United’s approach and squad depth remain options to watch as the Blades press on with their preparations.
