Christian Pulisic suffered leg fracture in US loss to Belgium, out for several weeks

Christian Pulisic suffered a microfracture and a bone bruise to his leg during the United States’ 4-1 World Cup knockout defeat to Belgium on Monday, according to an announcement from US Soccer. The injury occurred in the second half in Seattle, and Pulisic was withdrawn from the match shortly afterward. He underwent X-ray and MRI examinations on Tuesday to assess the full extent of the damage, with initial indications suggesting the setback will sideline him for several weeks. US Soccer and Milan are collaborating on a rehabilitation plan to help him recover and return to full fitness.
Following the United States’ disappointing World Cup exit, some analysts and pundits highlighted comments Pulisic made to reporters after the game regarding his injury. When asked about what happened, Pulisic explained, “I just totally twisted my ankle and my knee in one play … I have time to rest. It’s just an unfortunate way to finish.” His remark sparked reactions online and in sports media, including a pointed response from Carli Lloyd, the former US women’s national team star who now works as an analyst for Fox. Lloyd posted on social media the day after the match, seemingly directed at Pulisic: “You rest when your playing career is over. Period.”
The discussion around Pulisic’s injury continued with comments from former US men’s national team captain Landon Donovan. On his Unfiltered Soccer podcast, Donovan reflected on the reality of the moment, saying, “the reality is, [Pulisic] came out of a World Cup knockout game at home, with his leg still intact … you would have had to fucking drag me off the field. And I would have punched the doctor in the face and said, ‘You’re not taking me off the field. Put whatever you need to put in me, and I’m staying on the field.’”
Pulisic’s injury-plagued World Cup run was a major talking point as the United States reached the knockout stage but ultimately fell short. He had delivered a standout performance in the opening 45 minutes of the group-stage victory over Paraguay, a game the US won 4-1. However, he was withdrawn at halftime after aggravating a left-calf issue, an injury that had already caused him to miss the second group match, a 2-0 win against Australia. He later appeared as a substitute in a dead-rubber 3-2 defeat to Turkey, and then started the last-32 clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina, playing 88 minutes but rarely posing a consistent goal threat as the US secured a 2-0 win to advance.
This latest setback for Pulisic adds to a season marked by injury challenges as he paces his recovery and rehabilitation. Milan, the club he represents, is coordinating with US Soccer on a structured plan to help him regain peak condition and resume his contributions on the field as soon as possible. With Pulisic’s leadership and experience, the United States will be hoping for a return to form once he completes his recovery, contributing to the team’s future campaigns and potential World Cup pursuits.
