Cole Speer back with Georgia football? ‘I wouldn’t make any assumptions’

Kirby Smart wasn’t ready to say that Cole Speer is back with Georgia football for a fifth season.A day after a report that the wide receiver and special teams standout was at practice this week and would be going through an NCAA acclimation period, Smart indicated that may be jumping the gun.“I wouldn’t make any assumptions right now with the NCAA and the rulings and the things going on,” Smart, the Georgia coach, said on Wednesday Aug.19.  “He is not officially back with the team. We’ve had conversations with he and a lot of guys but nothing is official yet.”Speer’s return to the Bulldogs wouldn’t add a game-changer for a wide receiver group that may be the biggest question mark for the Bulldogs. What the Calhoun product would bring as as a fifth-year player taking advantage of a court ruling that made players from the class of 2022 eligible for an extra year is a veteran at a position that can use one.London Humphreys, playing his fourth college season, and Sacovie-White Helton and transfer Isiah Canion are the most experienced players at wideout. White-Helton and Canion, who transferred this year from Georgia Tech, are in their third seasons.Everyone else is in their first or second seasons: second-year players Landon Roldan, Talyn Taylor, Thomas Blackshear and Tyler Williams and freshmen Craig Dandrige, Dallas Dickerson, Ryan Mosley and Tre Shields.White-Helton broke into a smile when asked about what Speer would bring if he re-joined the team.“His experience of being here for three or four years and adding another year if he decides to come back,” White-Helton said. “And he helps the young guys. It’s not just me, London and Isiah in the room with playing experience. He’s been here for four or five years. He’s been here since before I got here. He definitely can help with his experience and being able to calm people down.”Speer, who didn’t catch a pass last season, should make his biggest impact on special teams. He has 8 career tackles and blocked a punt against Alabama in the SEC championship game. Speer also has 5 career catches for 56 yards. This article originally appeared on Athens Banner-Herald: Cole Speer back with Georgia football? ‘I wouldn’t make any assumptions’
