The father of Colorado quarterback JuJu Lewis said Thursday that his son had a medical emergency at the school’s athletic facilities on Wednesday and was immediately taken to a local hospital.”He is recovering and thankful to his medical team, teammates and Colorado fans for their prayers and support,” a statement from the Lewis family said via T. Carlton Lewis’ X account. “Please respect Julian and the Lewis family’s privacy. We will have no further comment at this time.”Wednesday evening, Lewis had appeared as doubtful on Colorado’s initial injury report ahead of its game against Kansas State on Saturday.Lewis has not appeared in a game for the Buffaloes since he was benched in favor of Isaac Wilson in a Week 4 loss to Baylor. Wilson, the younger brother of current Miami Dolphins QB Zach Wilson, has been Colorado’s starter since that game. The Buffaloes are in the midst of a five-game losing streak after beginning the season 2-0.Lewis’ commitment to Colorado was hailed as a major coup for the Buffaloes at the end of the 2024 season. He was a five-star recruit and the No. 3 quarterback in the country when he joined the team in January of 2025 as an early enrollee. After taking over as the team’s starter during a lost 2025 season, Colorado opted to sit Lewis at the end of the season to preserve a potential redshirt. However, the 2026 season didn’t get off to a great start. Through parts of four games, Lewis was 61-of-95 passing for 733 yards and six touchdowns with two interceptions. After Lewis didn’t appear in the loss to Texas Tech — backup Kaneal Sweetwyne attempted two passes — Colorado coach Deion Sanders said that he would like Lewis to explain to reporters why he hadn’t entered the game, but that Lewis had not been demoted from starter to No. 3 quarterback. The uncertainty around Lewis’ spot on the depth chart increased on Tuesday. When asked if he’d seen JuJu “fight” to get his starting job back during a news conference Tuesday, Sanders gave an answer that was simultaneously revealing and cryptic after saying that it was “on [Lewis]” if the second-year QB was going to get another chance to be the starter.”That’s a heck of a question,” Sanders said before pausing to collect his thoughts. “You know, the thing about it, if you answer that, you may say I’m taking a shot at a kid and I’m not going to do that. I’m not going to go down that rabbit hole because I’m so honest that honesty gets you in trouble. And all my life I’ve been brutally honest in my entire life. I’ve never been sideways when I played the game, when I left the game, when I did television, when I did radio, when I did anything, social media. Never in my life have I been questioned with my integrity and my honesty. So I don’t want to go down there. You guys do your homework.”
