​CHICAGO — Members of two conservative groups are planning a rally in support of Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham outside of the United Center ahead of Saturday’s game against the Chicago Sky.The Chicago Young Republicans and Xx-Xy Athletics will host the rally at 1 p.m. on Madison Street near the atrium ahead of the 2:30 p.m. tipoff. This same space has been used for rallies in the past, most recently including a protest of striking concessions workers in 2023. Cunningham has drawn increased attention from the right for repeatedly voicing her stances on barring transgender girls from participation in youth sports.The Sky will not alter any stadium policies in anticipation of potential protests inside or outside the arena.The United Center does not have a stated policy for flags, but fans are typically allowed to display them during Bulls games. Fans are also allowed to bring in homemade signs and banners that measure 8.5 by 11 inches, but any signage with poles, sticks or other hard apparatuses is not allowed into the building. Similarly, signs with profane or “offensive” language will be barred.According to United Center policy, security is empowered to confiscate “signs that are not event-related, contain indecent or derogatory comments/images or signs otherwise deemed inappropriate.” The Sky have not issued a public determination on what will be considered “derogatory” ahead of Saturday’s game.“The Chicago Sky are committed to providing a welcoming space for all, and we remain focused on basketball and offering fans a great experience at the United Center,” the team said in a statement. “As always, we expect that everyone will continue to follow all standard arena safety, security, media and fan code of conduct policies and protocols.”This is the fourth such rally held before a Fever game in an opposing market.The WNBA has not issued league-wide guidelines for expected team or player conduct regarding these rallies, which leaves the decision-making to individual teams. Seattle Storm minority co-owner Celeste Keaton was previously fined and suspended for five games after confronting an Xx-Xy supporter who sat courtside during a game between the Storm and Fever.This is the Sky’s second game at the United Center this season — they lost to the Las Vegas Aces, 107-99, on July 28 — and the third in franchise history. The United Center also hosted the WNBA All-Star Game in July.
