Couch: 3 quick takes on Michigan State football’s 35-7 win over Eastern

   1. A comfortable win for MSU, but trouble might be comingEAST LANSING — It was the sort of first-half performance by Michigan State’s football team Saturday that had you thinking, “I wonder how Toledo’s doing?”Because either last week’s mild positives against the Rockets were overstated, or this week’s performance against Eastern Michigan, for a good while, was an alarming regression. Either way, not great. The Spartans rescued the vibes a bit the second half, getting enough control of the scoreboard in a 35-7 win. Their shortcomings didn’t wind up costing them. But we also saw what we saw — including the Spartans’ defense getting bullied on a 13-play, 78-yard Eastern Michigan touchdown drive that took half the second quarter, helping the Eagles out-gain MSU 162-143 in the first half. We saw EMU produce five runs of 10 yards or more before halftime and complete long throws of 15 and 20 yards shortly after halftime, while MSU didn’t have a single carry of 10 yards or more in the first 30 minutes, before before hitting a number of big plays in the third and fourth quarters, both on the ground and through the air.The good news for the MSU is that its depth and talent was, eventually, too much, as it should be. And that the Spartans’ response after halftime showed the focus and intent they had lacked early. The bad news: Until the Spartans face Rutgers two days after Thanksgiving, they’re unlikely to play another team that’ll wither the way the Eagles did Saturday.Eastern Michigan wore out. The gap in resources caught up to the Eagles. But it took too long for there to be a chasm between the two programs.Linebacker Jordan Hall’s absence was noticeable, but it shouldn’t be that noticeable. Alessio Milivojevic and the offense got it going in the second half. They likely won’t have so much grace again this season. The Spartans are 2-0, but it’s a 2-0 with a sense that trouble might be coming.Toledo, by the way, beat Central Connecticut State 63-10 on Saturday, for whatever that’s worth.2. MSU’s number of pass-catchers continues to be noteworthyNine different players caught passes for MSU, with six players catching two or more. Redshirt freshman Charles Taplin caught a 38-yard touchdown, the Spartans’ first true deep-ball completion of the season. Michigan transfer Fredrick Moore hauled in an 18-yard pass from Milivojevic to open the scoring. Redshirt freshman tight end Jaden Savoury continues to look like he’ll be a difference-maker, with four catches for 63 yards. This, on a day when No. 1 option Rodney Bullard and No. 2 Chrishon McCray were less involved than a week ago. We’re going to find out in the coming weeks who MSU’s true go-to guys are when the competition stiffens. I suspect Bullard and Savoury will be regular targets, and that McCray will keep a sizable role. But there’s some intrigue with the rest of this crew. Guys like Taplin and classmate Braylon Collier (who had two catches Saturday). On a
