Could Klay Thompson Join The Miami Heat This Offseason?

After acquiring Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo in a trade this offseason, the Miami Heat roster has completely changed. The team dealt Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis as part of the deal and also lost All-Star Norman Powell to free agency. Now, the Heat must continue to navigate the rest of this offseason with some financial restrictions as they attempt to build the roster around Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. Earlier this offseason, the team signed wing Tim Hardaway Jr. to a one-year deal and brought back Simone Fontecchio but there are more moves to be made. With the recent extension of Andrew Wiggins, the Heat opened up a little bit of money by shaving $9 million off his player option for the upcoming season. One player who has been put on the trading block is veteran wing Klay Thompson of the Dallas Mavericks and the Heat reportedly have some level of interest in adding the four-time NBA champion. The main priority for the Heat at the moment is their attempt to lure LeBron James to rejoin the franchise. He is continuing to hear pitches from different franchises before he makes a decision, which is expected soon. However, Thompson is a solid consolation prize for Miami if the team is not able to acquire James.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThompson, 36, is not the same three-point specialist he used to be but is still quite strong. With the Golden State Warriors, he and Stephen Curry formed the strongest three-point shooting backcourt in NBA history and Thompson had years of success, earning five consecutive All-Star nods. The end of his tenure in Golden State was plagued by injuries as he missed two full seasons from 2019-2021. However, it didn’t seem to slow him down too much as he still posted strong numbers and helped lead Golden State to another championship in 2022.After the Finals run, Thompson’s numbers started to decline as he began exiting his prime. He joined the Dallas Mavericks in 2024 on a three-year, $50 million contract. With Dallas, he has still been a solid shooter from beyond the arc but the franchise is heading in a new direction after trading Luka Doncic to the Lakers in 2025 and drafting Cooper Flagg last offseason. With one year left on his deal, Thompson is a prime candidate to be dealt this offseason. The question is who will take on the contract for one final season? As mentioned earlier, the Heat are financially strapped at the moment and it would be difficult for the franchise to take on that contract. However, there is a scenario where the Mavericks are forced to waive and stretch Thompson’s salary if they are unable to find a trade partner, similar to Damian Lillard’s situation last offseason. That could open the door for Miami to add Thompson to the rotation and he would be a strong addition on a much cheaper contract.Join the CommunityDon’t miss out on our ROUNDTABLE community and the latest news!
