David López will remain in Girona for another season after the club announced a contract extension that keeps the Barcelona-born defender at Montilivi through June 2027. The agreement comes after his previous deal expired on June 30, and it ensures that one of the team’s most veteran figures will continue to contribute his experience and leadership to the squad. Since joining Girona from RCD Espanyol in the summer of 2022, López has been part of some of the most memorable moments in the club’s recent history, including their ascent to the Champions League and the achievement of scoring Girona’s first-ever goal in the top continental competition, a strike against Feyenoord in October 2024.
Despite injuries that limited his playing time late last season, the club opted to keep a player who brings stability, leadership, and a wealth of know-how to the squad. With this renewal, David López will begin his fifth season as a Girona player, continuing his important role within the squad’s defensive and midfield frameworks.
Born in Barcelona on October 9, 1989, López is a product of the RCD Espanyol academy. His early career included loan spells at Terrassa, Leganés, and Huesca before moving abroad for the first time in 2014 to join Napoli, where he captured the Italian Super Cup. He returned to Espanyol two years later, emerging as a locker-room leader and eventually serving as captain. In the summer of 2022, he joined Girona, bringing versatility to both central defense and midfield and contributing valuable experience to the team’s competitive ambitions.
López’s continued presence at Girona underscores the club’s commitment to maintaining a seasoned core as they push for sustained success in La Liga and European competition. His leadership, football intelligence, and versatility remain key assets as Girona aims to build on its recent history and pursue new milestones in the coming seasons.
