Bill Simmons believes LeBron James has already finalized his free-agent decision and is simply waiting for the right moment to announce it later in the offseason. The 2026 market has already been full of activity, with All-NBA standouts like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jaylen Brown changing jerseys through trades. Yet the centerpiece of the summer remains LeBron’s choice about where he will suit up for his 24th NBA campaign. While the timing of the reveal is being drawn out, Simmons contends that the decision is effectively locked in.
During the latest episode of The Bill Simmons Show, the veteran analyst stated that LeBron’s plan to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers is a done deal, and he suggested that rumors of a move to the Golden State Warriors were a strategic pressure tactic. “And now it’s pretty clear they (Golden State) were being used as leverage as LeBron goes back to Cleveland… The Cleveland thing is done,” Simmons proclaimed. This would mark James’ second return to the Cavaliers and his third stint with the team that drafted him in 2003.
A homecoming to Cleveland is widely regarded as a deeply poetic option and could also present one of the strongest basketball fits for his final chapter. The lingering question, of course, is why the official announcement is taking longer than expected. Given how meticulously James and his representatives are handling his free agency, it’s easy to doubt anything that isn’t a direct statement from LeBron himself.

Nevertheless, Simmons remains among the most trusted voices in sports media and recently was the first to reveal that the Boston Celtics had offered Jaylen Brown in a trade involving Giannis Antetokounmpo. Jeff Teague, a former NBA All-Star, shares a similar view, believing that James will return to his home state and play for Cleveland, with the former guard spending his offseason in Ohio.
Even though LeBron continues to receive competitive offers from several contending teams, the final decision could still come at the last possible moment. Yet all indicators seem to be pointing toward a homecoming to Cleveland, aligning with the prevailing narrative surrounding this offseason.
