Egypt sharply criticizes World Cup referee after loss to Argentina

On July 8, the Egyptian Football Association voiced strong criticism of a referee from their team’s World Cup defeat by Argentina, signaling concerns about fairness in a statement released Wednesday. The association also submitted a formal complaint against Francois Letexier, a French official who refereed the match played Tuesday in Atlanta. FIFA declined to comment.
The late stages of the Round of 16 showdown featured several contentious moments. An Egyptian goal was ruled out for a foul in the 58th minute, and Argentina—despite trailing by two goals in the 79th minute—mounted a dramatic comeback to reach the quarterfinals. With Lionel Messi at the helm, Argentina became the first side in World Cup history to overturn a two-goal deficit with 15 minutes remaining and win a knockout match within regulation time. They also became the first reigning champions to erase such a deficit.
Nevertheless, Egypt—grenched by the possibility of one of football’s greatest upsets—continued to vent its frustration in the wake of the thrilling match. The Egyptian Football Association extended thanks to supporters and players for advancing to the Round of 16, but then turned its attention to the match officiating in a statement posted on social media Wednesday.
The association asserted, “At the same time, the Egyptian Football Association cannot remain silent regarding the refereeing decisions witnessed during the match against Argentina, as well as the failure to make appropriate use of the video assistant referee (VAR) system.” It added that several key incidents raised serious concerns and left profound questions about the consistency and fairness of decisions that directly influenced the course of the game. The association’s official website described the refereeing during the match as “under suspicion.” A game summary highlighted a missed foul on Mohammed Salah in the 16th minute, a “gift” free kick to Argentina in the 45th minute, and another missed call in stoppage time, which occurred just before the decisive goal.
Egyptian officials and analysts, both locally and internationally, have pointed to controversial and influential refereeing moments throughout the contest. The association emphasized the need to uphold the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and transparency in match officiating, especially in a tournament as prestigious as FIFA World Cup 2026. The events of the match understandably sparked widespread frustration among players, staff, and supporters who anticipated exemplary officiating on football’s grandest stage.
Egyptian manager Hossam Hassan stated that his team felt they had been treated unfairly and hinted at outside influence on the referees. His players echoed these criticisms, criticizing the officiating performance. “We looked better than the reigning champions,” Hassan remarked, underscoring the sentiment that Egypt had performed at least on par with, if not above, the tournament’s defending champions before the calls affected the outcome.
