Former Hawaii men’s volleyball libero Kolby Kanetake is joining the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team as an assistant coach.Kanetake, a Moanalua High School alumnus, has spent the past six years as an assistant and associate head coach at Chaminade.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement“We are very excited to welcome Kolby back to Manoa to join the UH women’s volleyball program,” Rainbow Wahine volleyball coach Joshua Walker said in a press release. “His success so far as a coach is impressive to say the least, and his success as a player gives him a unique perspective on how to be successful here. I know he will work hard, diligently, and effectively, and will be a great asset for the Wahine volleyball program. He’s an elite addition to our team.”During his tenure at Chaminade, the Silverswords went 127-37. Kanetake won a AVCA Thirty Under 30 award in 2022 and was the AVCA NCAA Division II Assistant Coach of the Year in 2024.“I am thrilled and honored to rejoin the UH athletics ohana,” Kanetake said in the release. “My time as a player and a student at UH was deeply impactful, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to now work alongside Coach Walker. I would like to thank my family, friends as well as all my former players, colleagues and past coaches for helping me be ready for this opportunity.”As a player at UH, Kanetake was a three-year starter as a libero. Walker’s first year as an assistant under head coach Charlie Wade was for Kanetake’s senior season, when he was named to the AVCA All-America second team.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementFollowing his senior year, Kanetake was a student assistant at UH for a season and then became a volunteer assistant at California.He was an assistant at San Francisco for both the women’s and indoor team for a year before returning home and founding the Aloha State Volleyball Club.Kanetake is the first official hire on the staff of Walker, who was named the fourth head coach in Rainbow Wahine program history in early June after Robyn Ah Mow resigned in April.Hawaii has yet to release a complete schedule for the 2026 season, which starts next month.
