Fifa official refuses to answer BBC’s Balogun ban questions

The head of FIFA’s disciplinary committee declined to respond to BBC inquiries about the process that led to Jarell Quansah’s two-match suspension for World Cup action. Quansah, who plays for Bayer Leverkusen and represents England, was sent off during England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico after delivering a high challenge on Jesus Gallardo. FIFA classified the foul as serious foul play, resulting in Quansah receiving an additional ban beyond the standard one-game suspension.
In contrast, the committee chose to waive a ban for United States forward Folarin Balogun, who was dismissed for serious foul play against Bosnia-Herzegovina and should have faced a two-game ban. This decision drew widespread criticism, especially after it emerged that U.S. President Donald Trump and White House officials had lobbied FIFA regarding Balogun’s ban.
BBC sports editor Dan Roan confronted Mohammad al-Kamali, the chair of FIFA’s disciplinary committee, as he arrived for England’s quarter-final against Norway on Saturday. Roan asked several questions, including whether Balogun’s suspension was influenced by a request from the FIFA president, what details could be shared about that, and why Quansah’s two-match suspension was imposed. He also sought comment on how the decision had been portrayed or reported. Roan further asked if Al-Kamali could provide any information at all.
Al-Kamali did not respond to any of the questions. FIFA issued an 871-word statement after the Balogun ruling, stating that the decision was made after considering “all of the specific circumstances surrounding the incident and evidence available,” but the statement did not specify the factors that were weighed. Quansah was unavailable for England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway.
As the World Cup drew to a close, BBC Sport continued to cover the tournament’s developments. The narrative surrounding disciplinary actions remained a focal point of discussion, particularly regarding consistency and transparency in the decision-making process. The ongoing coverage highlighted questions about how punishments are assessed, the criteria applied to similar offenses, and the extent to which external lobbying or administrative considerations might influence outcomes. This evolving debate underscored the demand for greater clarity from FIFA on the procedures and rationales behind disciplinary sanctions, especially when high-profile cases attract widespread scrutiny and contention.
