FC Barcelona officially opened preparations for the 2026-27 season on July 13, assembling a squad that blends available first-team players, several players returning from loan spells, and a group of rising academy talents. Hansi Flick’s side has already fortified its attack with the signings of Anthony Gordon and, pending official confirmation, Karim Adeyemi. The German coach is also expected to keep the core of the midfield intact, although the possible exit of Marc Casado could alter the plan. The defensive line remains the area with the most unresolved questions, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The club recently extended Andreas Christensen’s contract by two more seasons, leaving Barcelona with four senior center-backs: Pau Cubarsi, Ronald Araujo, Eric Garcia, and the Dane, Christensen. Whether this quartet will stay as is remains to be seen. Barcelona are weighing the possibility of signing another defender, a decision that could depend on whether one of the current options moves on.
Christensen has signed a new contract, reinforcing the defense. Meanwhile, another player whose role is still to be defined is Gerard Martin. Although naturally a left-back, there is internal belief that Flick envisions him as a future central defender, following his outstanding performances in that position last season. Academy product Alvaro Cortes, who has already made his senior debut, will also be assessed during pre-season to determine if he can earn a place in the first-team squad.
At right-back, Jules Kounde remains the undisputed first-choice. However, it has been suggested that Barcelona would entertain offers if a substantial bid arrives, even though the player has stated he does not want to leave. Behind him, several players are competing for the backup role, with Eric Garcia still an option due to his versatility.
Flick also aims to evaluate two younger prospects: Xavi Espart, who recently helped Spain win the Under-19 European Championship, and Hector Fort, who returns after a loan spell with Elche. The left-back position presents significant decisions as Barcelona remain confident about completing the signing of Joao Cancelo from Al-Hilal, though the deal has yet to be finalized. Cancelo can operate on either flank, but Flick prefers deploying him on the left to maximize his attacking qualities alongside teammates such as Raphinha or Gordon.
Alejandro Balde is expected to battle for minutes, making clear his intention to remain at the club. Meanwhile, promising youngster Jofre Torrents will be closely evaluated before a decision is made on whether he stays with the first team or gains experience on loan.
The coming weeks will be decisive in shaping Barcelona’s defensive architecture, with several positions still open and multiple academy players in the mix as the club contemplates the best path forward for a robust, balanced back line. As the window progresses, the strategic choices in defense, including potential additions, departures, and player development, will be pivotal to how Flick structures his squad for the 2026-27 season and beyond.
