On Wednesday, a right-handed pitcher elected free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Sacramento. According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Gregory Santos will become a free agent after just three Major League appearances this season with the Giants. In his second stint with San Francisco, Santos allowed two earned runs on five hits over five innings, recording one strikeout.
The most substantial action he’s seen in the majors came in 2023 with the Chicago White Sox, when he pitched 66.1 innings for the American League Central club. Injuries have hampered the 26-year-old’s ability to make a meaningful impact at the major league level. He underwent surgery in 2024 to repair cartilage in his right knee.
“There’s a clearly talented arm under that pile of injuries, as Santos’ terrific 2023 season illustrates,” wrote Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors. However, while his professional debut dates back to 2016 with Boston’s Dominican Summer League squad, injuries have limited him to just 347 1/3 professional innings to date.
Santos is now free to sign with any club that shows interest in his services. The landscape of his career includes a notable track record of promise despite setback, with the potential for a rebound if he can stay healthy and resume the form that made him a compelling pitching prospect.
