Former SeaWolves catcher Alfonzo makes MLB debut during family tragedy

Eliezer Alfonzo Jr. spent nearly ten years climbing through the minor leagues, slowly earning his place in the sport he loves. Over the course of his journey, he spent portions of three seasons with the Erie SeaWolves, a tenure that culminated in two Eastern League championships after the 2023 and 2024 seasons. In November, the Los Angeles Dodgers signaled their belief in him by adding him as a free agent, and his perseverance paid off as he finally reached the major leagues, making his debut on Sunday, July 5. That day arrived amid a flood of emotions. He stepped into the batter’s box for his MLB debut while the nation and his team were still processing a recent, heavy personal loss: the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela had claimed the lives of his sister, Eliana, and his stepmother, Patricia, just weeks earlier on June 24.
“Eliezer started every playoff game during the SeaWolves’ 2023 and 2024 championship runs,” Erie SeaWolves president Greg Coleman said. “Watching him take the field for his MLB debut while carrying such grief says everything about who he is. We’re keeping him in our thoughts.” The Dodgers drew awe and sympathy from fans as Alfonzo stepped to the plate, a standing ovation rolling through the Los Angeles crowd as whispers of his story spread across the stadium before the first pitch.
“He was always an easy guy to root for, and I’m so happy he made it to the show, even if the path here came under such tough circumstances,” said Greg Gania, a former SeaWolves broadcaster. “The entire baseball community has felt the pain of all the unimaginable loss in Venezuela, where so many Venezuelans play the game. To witness the sport rally around one of its own teammates facing such grief is a testament to how close-knit the baseball world can be.”
Alfonzo, who is the son of former major league catcher Eliezer Alfonzo, entered the game with a calm, respectful demeanor. He went 0-for-2 in his debut, yet he still found time to speak with reporters after the game, despite the weight of his personal tragedy looming large. “Honestly, it was a little difficult, but at the same time, I thank God for everything,” Alfonzo told MLB.com in Spanish. “What happened is out of my hands and part of life. Only God knows why these things happen. I went out there to honor my sister and my stepmother, and to give my best in a moment of immense difficulty. We didn’t get the win, but you have to keep moving forward.”
During the game, Alfonzo paid tribute on his cap to both relatives. Across the brim and the front, he inscribed “E y P” and “RIP,” while the side bore “VZ” for Venezuela. He shared a personal anecdote about a sister who, three weeks prior, had told him she’d had a “beautiful dream” about his career, though she would not reveal its meaning until it happened. He believed the dream foretold his major-league call-up, a moment he described as a dream come true despite the sorrow that surrounded it.
“I couldn’t be happier for Fonzy getting called up,” Gania observed. “He played on some incredible Erie teams and will forever be linked to the history of the franchise.” The news of Alfonzo’s loved ones’ passing cast a shadow over his milestone moment, yet it also underscored the resilience that has characterized his career. The baseball community’s response—rallying around a player in grief—served as a reminder of the sport’s supportive culture and its capacity to lift up those who have endured profound loss. It’s a narrative that speaks to the power of perseverance, family, and the enduring hope that drives athletes to push forward, even when the road has been long and fraught with tragedy.
As Alfonzo continues his journey in the major leagues, his story remains one of tenacity and courage: a player who not only found a path to the big leagues after years in the minors but did so while honoring the memory of family members who were lost far too soon.
