Head coach Andrews expressed strong enthusiasm about Benji’s future with the club, saying they are thrilled he has signed a new deal and will remain part of the group this season. He emphasized that Benji has immense potential and that there is a clear path for him to develop his game further. Andrews pointed out that Benji has already gained experience at senior international level, having been a significant contributor to Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign. He noted that last season’s productive loan spell in Belgium was unfortunately halted by an injury, but remains confident in Benji’s ability to rebound.
The coach outlined the immediate priorities for Benji: first, seamless integration into the squad on a regular basis. With his last competitive appearance dating from mid-November, he has endured a lengthy spell out through injury, making the return to first-team football all the more critical. Once back, Benji must come into the first-team space, challenge his teammates, and demonstrate the same level of ability and the personality that Andrews believes he possesses.
Andrews reaffirmed that Benji’s challenge is to reintroduce himself to the first-team environment, push his peers, and showcase both his technical proficiency and his character. The emphasis is on continuity, consistency, and proving himself in high-level training and match situations so that he can impact games positively.
Benji Fredrick is a product of the Simoiben Football Academy in Kaduna, Nigeria. He spent the 2021/22 season with Abubakar Bukola Saraki FC before transferring to Nasarawa United in Nigeria’s top division. In the following campaign he featured at both centre-back and right-back, while also representing Nigeria at the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations, where the team finished in third place.
Fredrick initially joined Brentford B on loan in August 2023. In his standout first season under manager Neil MacFarlane, he earned a place on the bench for two Premier League fixtures and two FA Cup ties, and Brentford subsequently made the move permanent in April 2024. He continued to excel in 2024/25, earning a place in two additional Premier League matchday squads and playing a central role as the young Bees advanced to the Premier League Cup final and captured the Under-21 Professional Development League national title.
In May 2025, Fredrick was honoured as Brentford B Players’ Player of the Year, and later that month he made his senior Nigeria debut in a Unity Cup final penalty shoot-out victory over Jamaica at Gtech Community Stadium. He then moved on loan to FCV Dender for the 2025/26 season, making 15 appearances across the Belgian Pro League and Croky Cup before his loan was cut short by a knee injury.
During the September to November international windows, Fredrick started the final four matches of Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. He also began Nigeria’s victory over Gabon in the African play-off semi-final, though the Panthers were ultimately defeated by DR Congo in the final after a penalty shoot-out.
Regarding Benji’s new contract and his promotion to the first team, B team head coach Sam Saunders commented: “Benji has been a complete pleasure to have since he arrived in the B team. I’m incredibly proud of his progression and the heights he has reached during his time at Brentford. He’s an outstanding character—extraordinarily likeable, highly coachable, and a top guy who shows real bravery.” Saunders praised Benji’s development and conveyed confidence that his attitude and work ethic will continue to serve him well as he steps into the first-team arena.
