Formula 1 drivers will usually find absolutely anything to blame for a bad race before pointing the finger at themselves or admitting outright defeat. If they get slapped with a time penalty, they will spend the entire post-race media pen whining about the stewards and claiming their podium was robbed. But for George Russell, Sunday at the United States Grand Prix was so fundamentally awful that he didn’t even have the energy to argue about his five-second penalty. When you spend 56 laps wrestling a highly upgraded, multi-million-dollar Mercedes W17 around the notoriously bumpy Circuit of the Americas only to go backward down the order, the penalty is basically just salt in an already massive wound.Russell: “The Pace Just Was Rubbish”During his post-race interview with Sky Sports F1, pitlane reporter Craig Slater asked Russell how much the time penalty actually stung, and whether he felt the stewards were being unfair. Instead of taking the bait and blasting race control, Russell brutally targeted the sheer lack of speed coming from his own garage.“I mean, the pace just was rubbish today. That’s the long and short of it, of course,” Russell stated bluntly. “The five-second didn’t help things and probably cost me two or three positions. Slater pressed the Brit on whether his massive deficit was tied to his discomfort with the upgraded aerodynamic parts.“Just not being quick enough, to be honest. Yeah, I need to try and understand why it is,” Russell confessed. For a works team with the financial might of Mercedes, hearing a lead driver admit they are completely clueless about a sudden drop in performance is a terrifying sign for the remainder of the 2026 campaign. The simulator data back in Brackley is clearly not translating to actual downforce on the tarmac.United States Grand Prix, Saturday AUSTIN, TEXAS – OCTOBER 24: George Russell of Great Britain driving the (63) Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team W17 on track during qualifying ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of United States at Circuit of The Americas on October 24, 2026 in Austin, Texas.
