SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Rafael Devers delivered the tiebreaking run as part of a two-run eighth inning when catcher Hunter Goodman threw wildly into center field on a stolen-base attempt, allowing Devers to score and helping the San Francisco Giants rally past the Colorado Rockies 3-1 on Sunday. The Giants overcame Jake McCarthy’s second leadoff inside-the-park homer of the season to secure the win, snapping a stretch of nine straight losses to the Rockies at home and pushing their home-season record against Colorado to a strong 36-7 since 2021.
San Francisco moved to 41-55 on the year, gaining a four-game split and entering the All-Star break in fourth place in the NL West. The Giants have won 21 of their last 23 home games against Colorado, a dominant run that has carried them through the seasons. Meanwhile, Colorado dropped to 39-59 on the year, the worst mark in the National League, and are 17-34 on the road.
McCarthy’s early power was the spark for Colorado. He hit a leadoff inside-the-park home run off Trevor McDonald to begin the game, reaching on a single bounce to the 415-foot sign in right-center that deflected off the glove of right fielder Jung Hoo Lee. McCarthy slid safely home ahead of a misthrown relay from second baseman Luis Arraez, giving Colorado a rare fast start and his 10th homer of the season.
The game remained tight until the eighth. Drew Gilbert’s RBI single evened the score in the fourth, but the decisive frame began with Devers leading off the eighth by drawing a walk from Antonio Senzatela (9-2). Devers advanced to third on Bryce Eldridge’s one-out single. Grant McCray pinch-ran for Eldridge and broke for second on the first pitch to Willy Adames. Goodman’s throw to second bounced into center field, allowing McCray to reach third; Adames then singled to push across two more runs for a 3-1 lead.
Erik Miller (2-0) came on in relief, striking out Mickey Moniak with a runner aboard in the eighth, and then escaping a jam after Goodman’s single in the ninth. McDonald had worked seven innings, allowing three hits and earning the win after a rough previous start that saw eight earned runs and 11 hits over just 2 1/3 innings in a 9-3 defeat to Toronto on Tuesday.
Looking ahead, the Rockies visit Cincinnati on Friday night to continue their schedule, while the Giants begin the second half with a trip to Seattle on Friday.
