Giants’ Cam Skattebo feared amputation after gruesome 2025 ankle injury

New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo revealed he wondered if doctors would amputate his foot in the immediate aftermath of his gruesome ankle injury, a moment that tested his commitment to the game before ultimately strengthening it.The disclosure comes from the Giants-produced documentary Skattebo: The Road Back, which chronicles his recovery from the open tibia fracture and ankle dislocation he suffered against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8 of last year.Speaking about the second-quarter play on which the injury occurred, Skattebo described an unsettling pregame feeling that foreshadowed what was to come.“Before the game, I actually had an out-of-body experience,” he said. “We were all praying in the showers. I was holding both my teammates’ hands. It almost felt like, when we were playing, my body was lifted out of my own body. It was weird. I didn’t feel like I was in the present me. I didn’t feel like myself.”Once the doctor manipulated his ankle back into place, the pain intensified. In the X-ray room, the staff cut off his shoe and sock. Skattebo said he was a half-second from passing out after seeing how far the dislocation had stretched the skin.He later shared images of the pre-surgery ankle, which he described as swollen to the size of a softball, along with X-rays showing 15.1 millimeters of separation between his tibia and ankle before five screws stabilized the joint.“When I first got hurt, like I’m asking the doctors, like, they’re going to have to cut my foot off,” Skattebo said in the documentary.Around the same time, the injury prompted him to question whether he still wanted to play. He admitted there was a stretch where looking at football and saying he wanted to do it again became difficult. His older brother Leo later observed that the forced break allowed Skattebo to experience life without the sport and conclude he did not want that outcome. The process, Leo said, moved him from a half-in mindset to a deeper level of commitment.Skattebo returned to the field in Week 1 of the 2026 season and has since re-established himself as a central piece of the Giants’ offense. This article originally appeared on Giants Wire: Giants’ Cam Skattebo feared amputation after gruesome 2025 ankle injury
