New Delhi: Veteran administrator Imran Khwaja suffered a surprising defeat as Gurumurthy Palani, Mubashshir Usmani, and Rudie van Vuuren were elected as Associate Member Directors of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The election took place during the ICC Annual Conference in Edinburgh on Wednesday. Palani secured 35 votes, while Usmani and Vuuren were tied for second with 26 votes each. Khwaja and Mahinda Vallipuram received 23 and 19 votes respectively. Khwaja, who serves as the Deputy Chair, faced the day’s biggest upset as Palani and Vuuren joined the 17-member Board for the first time. Usmani, meanwhile, has retained his position on the governing body.
The conference drew strong attendance from the ICC’s leadership, including chairman Jay Shah, who were present for the T20 Women’s World Cup final at Lord’s on Sunday before proceeding to Scotland for the Annual Conference. The four-day event in Edinburgh is set to address a range of important cricketing issues, with key discussions and decisions anticipated across various agendas as the ICC charts its strategic direction. The conference, which concludes on July 11, will feature deliberations on development programs, governance reforms, financial sustainability, and the continued expansion of global cricket’s footprint. As the ICC moves forward, the impact of these electoral results will reverberate through member boards and national cricket organizations around the world, influencing policy, leadership structures, and the pace of cricketing initiatives in the coming years. The inclusion of Palani and Vuuren marks a notable shift on the ICC’s board, signaling evolving leadership dynamics at the highest level of international cricket administration.
