The Red Sox laid out a clear plan for the 2025 MLB Draft: prioritize large college pitchers. Boston used 15 of its 21 picks on pitchers, with 10 hurlers coming from the SEC. Every one of those 15 pitchers stood at least 6-foot-2 tall. While the emphasis was on pitching, the Sox did snap up a few power hitters as well, including fourth-round pick Mason White. The 22-year-old infielder, capable at both shortstop and second base, is from Arizona and crushed his 12th home run for High-A Greenville on Sunday. In addition to that homer, he has accumulated 12 doubles and three triples across 63 games.
“Mason’s a guy who showed power in college and has carried that ability into his early pro career,” said Greenville’s head coach Jarrett Pico. “The approach early in counts is to go for damage.” The Red Sox have urged White, a left-handed hitter, to keep being aggressive and look to inflict damage early in counts. Pico added that the area for improvement moving forward centers on swing decisions, especially with two strikes. “He does a good job with his swing decisions earlier in the counts,” Pico said.
White was Boston’s second-highest position-player pick in the draft, following second-rounder Henry Godbout. Godbout showed genuine power before sustaining a left-hand injury. The 22-year-old right-handed hitter from Virginia posted seven home runs and seven doubles in 34 games. The Red Sox already have 11 minor leaguers with 10 or more home runs, three of whom come from the 2025 draft class.

Looking ahead, the 2026 Draft is set for Saturday and Sunday. But first, here’s how the Red Sox’ 2025 draft picks are faring in their initial full professional seasons: Kyson Witherspoon, the first-rounder (15th overall) from Oklahoma, is 21 years old and has rebounded well after a rocky start to his pro career. Over his past seven Greenville starts dating back to May 24, he has a 3.38 ERA across 34 2/3 innings, with 39 strikeouts. That stretch follows an initial 7.18 ERA over his first seven starts, spanning 26 1/3 innings and 21 earned runs. Overall for Greenville, he owns a 5.02 ERA, a 1.44 WHIP, and a .260 opponent batting average through 14 starts, with 65 strikeouts and 30 walks in 61 innings.
Marcus Phillips, the 33rd overall pick and a first-rounder by some measures, played for Tennessee and is 21 years old. He has appeared in 13 games (12 starts) for Greenville, posting a 6.75 ERA, 1.79 WHIP, and a .266 opponents’ batting average. His performance highlights the ongoing process as he refines command and control as part of his development.
