​When new Alabama State football offensive coordinator Tony Hull arrived in January, he didn’t come with a predetermined offensive system.Instead, he used the spring and summer to observe every offensive skill position. With the help of the offensive staff, he entered fall camp with a better understanding of what his roster does well. During Alabama State football’s first scrimmage of fall camp at ASU Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 8, a glimpse of that philosophy shined through. The Hornets lost the starting core of their receivers from 2025, and the room in 2026 features a different skill set. But that isn’t forcing Hull to make it into something it’s not. Instead, he’s playing to what this room is good at.During the scrimmage, there wasn’t a lot of Andrew Body taking shots downfield like he did to Jalen Jones last season. Instead, Body turned to the screen game, where during one play Randall King turned a simple one-yard route into a touchdown run against the first-team defense of over 50 yards.ASU FB PRACTIVE OBSERVATIONS: Alabama State football’s first 2026 preseason practice observationsANDREW BODY: Alabama State football QB Andrew Body finding unique way to use social media to lead team”Every year, I go into the season and strip the walls, strip the house down to the studs, and figure out, you know, what is the house made of,” Hull told the Montgomery Advertiser after Alabama State’s scrimmage. “This is not the same offense that’s going to be at UAPB. This is not going to be the same offense that’s going to be at Grambling.” Saturday’s scrimmage gave Hull a good measuring tool of where his new foundation is at in a game situation, and he left ASU Stadium with more tools to continue to shape this offense into the best version it can be in 2026.
