If Klay Thompson is Available, the Trail Blazers Should Call

By admin — In News — July 14, 2026

The Portland Trail Blazers need more perimeter shooting. That’s not debateable. Portland owned the second-worst three-point percentage of any team in the NBA last season (34.3%) and hasn’t spent many resources on addressing that area of concern this offseason.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementSure, the return of Damian Lillard from a torn Achilles will help … as will the recent addition of former Indiana Pacers forward Micah Potter…. but that’s not enough. An answer to the Blazers’ problem does exist, though it’d just likely require a trade to achieve.Klay Thompson seems to be available.Ever since he said the reason he joined the Dallas Mavericks was to play with Luka Doncic, who was subsequently traded just months after Thompson signed on, it appeared his time in Dallas would be short-lived.And now we’re seeing rumors emerge of potential mutual interest in the Miami Heat and Thompson, likely by way of a buyout.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe Miami Herald reported that the Heat are in fact interested in adding Thompson, while Marc Stein revealed that the Mavericks would prefer a trade in an attempt to get something back for Thompson.”To this point as much has been relayed to me is the Mavs preference would be a trade,” Stein said. “I think it’s still early enough in the summer that if you’re the Mavs you would exhaust those options first, but there’s stuff we have to keep an eye on it.”Logically, that checks out. Dallas invested $50 million over three years into Thompson and doesn’t want to see him walk for nothing…. which is exactly why the Blazers should call.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThomspon, 36, shot 38.3 percent from beyond the arc last season while averaging 7.6 attempts per game. He’s far removed from the superstar he once was, but that’s not what Portland would need him to be anyway. It’d need the exact version of himself Thompson was just last season. The issue that may arise, however, is the compensation.Realistically, what would the Mavericks be asking for? A couple of second-rounders? Maybe a future first? If Dallas’ alternative is buying him out, it’s quite likely they’d hear out Portland’s offer — even if it wouldn’t be anything substantial.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAt some point, the Blazers have to start solving specific roster weaknesses rather than simply stockpiling assets, and few weaknesses on the current roster are more glaring than the one Thompson would address.Should GM Joe Cronin and Portland’s front office get the feeling that Thompson could be had, he’s absolutely worth the call to Masai Ujiri.
