The Indiana Fever are reshaping how they deploy Caitlin Clark after the All-Star guard voiced frustration with how her minutes were handled during her comeback from a back injury. With a marquee showdown against the Las Vegas Aces on the horizon, Indiana is adjusting its rotation to help Clark regain her rhythm more quickly. Clark is cleared to return to the court, but the Fever will manage her workload carefully. Head coach Stephanie White confirmed that Clark will be in the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Aces, marking her first appearance since sitting out the Fever’s most recent contest with the Phoenix Mercury. She will still operate under a minutes restriction, with White indicating a target range of approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
Reporting from the Indianapolis Star, Chloe Peterson notes that Indiana intends to eschew the previous stop-and-start approach that frustrated Clark during Wednesday’s loss to the Los Angeles Sparks. Instead of sporadic, short bursts on the floor, Clark is expected to receive longer stints to help her find a quicker rhythm on offense. This shift represents a significant move given Clark’s own admission that the prior plan made it hard for her to impact the game.
Clark returned to action against Los Angeles after missing two games due to a back injury and spending nearly two weeks away from competitive action. In that appearance, she logged 16 minutes, contributing nine points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal in Indiana’s 106-92 defeat. Afterward, Clark didn’t mince words about the distribution of her minutes, describing the experience as difficult to navigate and not conducive to getting into a flow. “It’s just really hard when you’re playing three minutes, (sub) out, three minutes, three minutes, then you’re on the bench,” she said. “It’s really, really hard to get into a flow. For the most part, I got good looks, some of them went, some of them didn’t. I probably didn’t get to have a feel for the game as I usually do. It’s just really, really hard for me to play in that scenario.”
For a guard who uses a heavy workload to drive the Fever, establishing a rhythm is essential, making Indiana’s revised plan a critical development. Even with the updated rotation, the Fever will continue to monitor Clark’s minutes as she works her way back to full strength. Clark has been averaging around 30 minutes per game this season, so the 20-to-25-minute target for Sunday marks another incremental step toward resuming her typical role.
The timing of this adjustment is particularly crucial. Indiana faces one of its most challenging tests of the season against the Aces, a team that comes into the game with a 17-6 record after a dominant performance against the Phoenix Mercury. As the Fever prepare for this high-profile matchup, the team’s decision to alter Clark’s minutes could play a significant role in how effectively she can contribute against one of the league’s top squads.
