Ireland name four debutants in much-changed team for Japan

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell has handed four debuts in a noticeably revised lineup as the team prepare to face Japan in the Nations Championship. After opening their campaign with a victory over Australia in Sydney, Farrell’s side now head to Newcastle for a clash with Japan, aiming to build on their strong start.
In a bold selection choice, Connacht forward Sean Jansen will earn his first cap, starting at number eight. He will be joined by club teammates Billy Bohan and Sam Illo, who provide props and are ready to make their debuts from the bench. Ulster back-rower Bryn Ward completes the quartet of uncapped players named in the matchday 23. The leadership role shifts within the squad as Tadhg Beirne takes over the captaincy from Dan Sheehan, with Ciaran Frawley stepping into the fly-half position.
Jamie Osborne shifts to the full-back berth after switching from the wing, as Jacob Stockdale enters the back three. Ireland will look to continue their positive momentum after their opening win and will rely on a balanced mix of experienced players and fresh dimensions introduced by Farrell’s selections.
Japan arrives in good form after an impressive Nations Championship debut, where they defeated Italy 27-10. Head coach Eddie Jones sticks with Ryunosuke Ito at fly-half, trusting the 21-year-old university student to steer the attack, supported by a group of teammates who will help him manage the responsibilities of No. 10. Ito will be relied upon to both orchestrate the offense and provide a steadying influence, as Jones explained: Ito is a young 10 who will have his ups and downs, but the team will back him and help him be himself.
Ito’s return to the number ten role follows a four-match ban that Jones served from the Japan Rugby Football Union for abusing match officials. Taira Main is retained on the wing, replacing Kippei Ishida in Japan’s only confirmed change to the starting lineup.
Japan XV: Takato Okabe, Mamoru Harada, Shuhei Takeuchi, Harry Hockings, Warner Dearns (captain), Ben Gunter, Kanji Shimokawa, Jack Cornelsen, Naoto Saito, Ryunosuke Ito, Taira Main, Yuya Hirose, Dylan Riley, Kazuma Ueda, Takuro Matsunaga. Replacements: Hayate Era, Sojiro Otuska, Keijiro Tamefusa, Michael Stolberg, Michael Leitch, Tiennan Costley, Itsuki Kamimura, Sam Greene.
Ireland XV: Tom O’Toole, Ronan Kelleher, Tom Clarkson, Tadhg Beirne (captain), James Ryan, Jack Conan, Nick Timoney, Sean Jansen, Craig Casey, Ciaran Frawley, Jacob Stockdale, Stuart McCloskey, Robbie Henshaw, Jimmy O’Brien, Jamie Osborne. Replacements: Tom Stewart, Billy Bohan, Sam Illo, Cormac Izuchukwu, Bryn Ward, Nathan Doak, Harry Byrne, Bundee Aki.
With a fresh-look Ireland lineup and a youthful Japan side led by Ito at fly-half, the fixture promises a compelling contrast of developing talent and tested experience. The match will be scrutinized for how Farrell’s new caps integrate with established performers and whether Ireland can extend their winning start while Japan seeks to build on their confident Nations Championship performance. This clash in Newcastle will also be a test of strategic balance: can Farrell’s four debutants adapt quickly to test-match conditions, and can Ito translate his early promise into a consistently influential display against a bold Irish challenge? Fans will be watching closely as both teams aim to set the tone for the rest of the tournament.
