Is this the season Zion Logue steps into key rotational role?

By admin — In News — July 10, 2026

The Buffalo Bills face a deep pool of options along the interior defensive line, with each candidate judged by how well they fit the new scheme under Jim Leonhard. Opinions about the quality of this group vary, and much of the assessment hinges on interpretation, since the Bills’ move to a different defensive approach this season makes precedent less reliable. Will the holdovers from last year integrate smoothly into Leonhard’s system, or will the Bills need to identify players who align more closely with the principles of former head coach Sean McDermott’s scheme to find NFL success? In today’s edition of “91 players in 91 days,” we spotlight a player who has spent two seasons on Buffalo’s practice squad and is striving to earn a spot on the 53-man roster this year.
Name: Zion Logue
Number: 93
Position: Defensive Tackle
Height/Weight: 6’6”, 325 pounds
Age: 24 (25 on 7/13/2026)
Experience/Draft: 1; selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the sixth round (No. 197 overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft
College: Georgia
Acquired: Signed with Bills’ practice squad on 8/27/2026
Financial situation (per Spotrac): Logue signed a reserve/futures deal in January. The two-year pact is worth $2.272 million in total with $7,000 guaranteed. If he’s released, Buffalo will absorb the guarantees as a dead cap charge this season. If Logue makes the 53-man roster, his cap hit for this season would be $1,078,500.
2025 Recap: Logue spent the offseason with Buffalo last year, participating in training camp and all three preseason games, totaling two tackles in those exhibitions. He was released by the Bills at the final roster cuts but was promptly re-signed to the practice squad the next day. After Ed Oliver sustained an injury in Buffalo’s 41-40 season-opening win against Baltimore, Logue was elevated from the practice squad to replace him for games against the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, and New England Patriots. He logged his first career sack with a half-sack in the win over the Jets, plus a tackle in that game and another tackle against New England. Once his third practice squad elevation had been used, he was not promoted to the active roster again, and he did not appear in any more games for the Bills that season.
Positional outlook: Logue is one of eight defensive tackles currently on the roster. The group includes Ed Oliver, Tommy Akingbesote, Phidarian Mathis, T.J. Sanders, Zane Durant, DeWayne Carter, and Deone Walker. Though Landon Jackson and Kody Huisman are listed as defensive ends, their roles will likely mirror the responsibilities of several interior linemen, blurring traditional position lines. Logue is likely to line up as a nose tackle, placing him in direct competition with Walker, Mathis, and Carter for meaningful snaps. It’s worth noting that offensive tackle Travis Clayton has also spent time working out as a defensive lineman this summer, signaling flexibility within the rotational approach.
2026 Offseason: Logue’s continued presence with the Bills hints at the organization’s belief in his potential to contribute inside and add depth to the interior linemen. His development will be watched closely as Buffalo emphasizes a front that can clog the middle, generate interior pressure, and maintain one-gap or two-gap versatility depending on the matchup and defensive calls. For Logue, the key will be consistency in practice, mastering the mental and physical demands of Leonhard’s system, and seizing any opportunities to rise above the depth chart when the coaching staff looks for a bigger, more disruptive presence in the middle.
