The latest chatter about whether Anthony Davis will be traded before he even suits up for the Washington Wizards may have reached a conclusion. Davis joined Washington after the Dallas Mavericks promptly shipped him in February 2026 in an effort to move on from a doomed move involving Luka Dončić. With Davis still awaiting his first game in a Wizards uniform, his name has dominated trade chatter throughout the summer, especially in connection with a potential move by the Golden State Warriors aimed at luring LeBron James.
On the most recent episode of the Game Over podcast featuring Rich Paul and Max Kellerman, Davis’s agent confirmed that his client will remain with the Wizards to begin the season. “Yes. Why wouldn’t he?” Paul replied when Kellerman pressed him about the rumors surrounding a possible trade. While this could be a negotiating tactic if talks are taking place behind the scenes, it also clearly signals that Davis is not available on the market simply for the sake of change of scenery.
That said, the door isn’t closed to the possibility of other teams pursuing a Davis deal to bolster their rosters and potentially entice LeBron James to join forces with his former 2020 championship teammate. Golden State has had a relatively quiet offseason, apparently waiting to see how LeBron’s decision unfolds before locking in their roster for the next season. Although the Warriors briefly looked like frontrunners to sign LeBron after his departure from the Lakers, they quickly lost ground to other suitors as a more attractive destination for the four-time MVP.
Acquiring Davis could be framed as a last-ditch effort to give LeBron more incentive to team up with him, but such a move would require parting with key pieces the franchise has shown it’s not willing to trade. Most notably, Jimmy Butler has been a focal point of Warriors discussions, but the organization has repeatedly stated that Butler is not for sale. With Butler expected to miss a significant portion of the upcoming season due to injury, trading him would be even less appealing for a franchise hoping to attract LeBron on a short-term run.
All signs point to Davis remaining in Washington as the franchise aims to return to its winning ways with Trae Young and AJ Dybantsa by his side. Meanwhile, LeBron James is more likely to explore options with a different contender for a one-season title push rather than joining Washington’s rebuilding project.
As the summer drags on, the Wizards appear to be betting on Davis’s steadiness to anchor a capable core, while the possibility of a LeBron pairing remains a remote but persistent rumor. The landscape around Anthony Davis’s future may still shift, but for now, the official message from his camp is clear: he’s staying in Washington to start the season, with plans to help the franchise regain its footing, and any LeBron-led superteam arrangement remains contingent on a complex web of trade dynamics and player availability across the league.
