Real Madrid unlikely to fulfil Jose Mourinho signing request

Real Madrid have had a busy summer so far as they prepare for the 2026-27 season, adding four new faces to Jose Mourinho’s squad ahead of the upcoming campaign. Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva have all officially signed on and are expected to travel to Madrid soon, but Mourinho remains unsatisfied and hungry for more help in key areas.
Reports indicate that Mourinho is seeking at least two more players to strengthen the squad: another centre-back and another midfielder. The centre-back position appears to be more likely to be addressed, with targets including Alessandro Bastoni and Nico Schlotterbeck among those reportedly on Real Madrid’s radar. By contrast, adding another midfielder this summer seems unlikely, and the club’s plans in that department appear constrained.
Earlier this month, Real Madrid publicly stated that they had no interest in Enzo Fernandez, who had been Mourinho’s preferred midfielder target. With Aurelien Tchouameni having signed a new five-year contract, the club is effectively ruling out midfield reinforcements this summer, according to MD. For Mourinho to land a midfield addition, Real Madrid have indicated that a current player must be sold, a stipulation that narrows the list of viable options.
Tchouameni had been widely discussed as a potential departure candidate, and there was interest from Manchester United, but that interest has cooled. This leaves Eduardo Camavinga as the most realistic option to facilitate a midfield signing, albeit with significant caveats. Camavinga has informed club officials that he will not entertain any offers, even if the club would consider accepting a bid, which complicates the equation for Mourinho. In practical terms, Camavinga is not being counted on as a potential addition for the 2026-27 season, despite the possibility that the French midfielder could be used as a bargaining tool if circumstances forced the club to explore options.
For Mourinho, the situation is less than ideal. He would have preferred to bring in a fresh face to add a new dimension to the midfield and broaden the tactical pool available to him, but the current reality suggests he may have to make do with what the squad already contains. The prospect of offloading a senior midfielder to fund a new arrival appears slim, given the lack of viable takers and the club’s willingness to part with a key asset. Consequently, the managerial plan seems to be moving forward with the existing midfield setup and any last-minute developments would hinge on unexpected sales or breakthroughs in negotiations.
In terms of the defense, the likelihood of strengthening the backline remains higher. The pursuit of a new centre-back could materialize if negotiations with Bastoni or Schlotterbeck progress positively, providing Real Madrid with a stabilizing presence at the heart of the defence. The club’s strategy suggests patience and meticulous planning, aiming to secure a high-calibre centre-back who can slot into Mourinho’s system and complement the new signings.
As the transfer window advances, Real Madrid fans and observers will be watching closely to see whether Mourinho’s plans for an additional centre-back and midfielder come to fruition. With four fresh arrivals already in the door and a ninth month to go before the season starts, the next phase of Real Madrid’s recruitment campaign will be pivotal in determining whether the squad can reach the ambitious objectives Mourinho has set for the 2026-27 campaign.
